Wilfrid Laurier University has appointed Kate McCrae Bristol as the acting director of athletics and recreation for a one-year team. She currently serves as the dean of students for the university’s Waterloo campus. A former student-athlete, Ms. McCrae Bristol was previously an assistant coach for the women’s basketball team at Yale University, as well as a national sports program manager for Special Olympics Canada.
Sarah Gottlieb became the new general counsel for Ontario Tech University in April. Ms. Gottlieb is the former senior legal counsel and director at the University of Toronto, where her focus was litigation, corporate and administrative law. She has also served as legal counsel for the Office of Ombudsman of Ontario. Ms. Gottlieb received a JD from Osgoode Hall Law School at York University.
David Zietsma has been appointed as president of Redeemer University, where he has held a number of leadership roles, including most recently interim president. Dr. Zietsma was deeply involved in developing the university’s 2020 and 2025 strategic plans after serving on the president’s council for the last 12 years. He has a master’s in history from the University of Waterloo and a bachelor of arts from McMaster University.
MacEwan University has appointed Richard Perlow as dean of the school of business for a five-year term beginning this summer. Dr. Perlow has held a faculty position at the University of Lethbridge since 2002 and has served as the faculty of management associate dean from 2006 to 2015. He has a PhD in philosophy from the University of Houston and will also be teaching in MacEwan’s department of organizational behaviour, human resources management and management.
On March 1, Marcia Anderson became the University of Manitoba’s new vice-dean Indigenous health, social justice and anti-racism. Dr. Anderson, who currently serves as vice-dean, Indigenous health, will be expanding her responsibilities to include the office of equity, diversity and inclusion, the office of community management, and social accountability. Before completing her MD at the U of M in 2022, she served as a medical officer of health for Indigenous Services Canada during the pandemic while also playing a senior advisory role regarding the management of COVID concerns for students, staff and faculty at the university. She also previously served as chair of the Indigenous Health Committee for the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada, which has led to a heightened awareness of the Indigenous community, the needs to support the education of Indigenous students as well as improved coordination between faculties of medicine in Canada. From 2017-2020, Dr. Anderson also served as executive director, Indigenous academic affairs for the Ongomiizwin-Indigenous Institute of Health and Healing at the U of M.
Rhonda McEwen will serve as the next president and vice-chancellor of Victoria University, affiliated with the University of Toronto, effective July 1, 2022. Dr. McEwen is the current vice-principal, academic and dean at the University of Toronto Mississauga, where she has oversight of all academic programs, planning and policy, faculty, teaching and learning and academic experience. Dr. McEwen is a Canada Research Chair in tactile interfaces, communication and cognition and holds a PhD from U of T’s faculty of information.
