Beverley Jacobs

Beverly Jacobs will serve as acting dean in the faculty of law at the University of Windsor until June 30. Dr. Jacobs is pausing her work as associate dean, academic, at the university while serving in the acting position. She is an associate professor in the faculty of law and practices part-time in her home community of Six Nations of the Grant River. From 2004 to 2009, Dr. Jacobs served as the president of the Native Women’s Association of Canada and in 2018 was inducted as a member of the Order of Canada. Her work focuses on ending gendered colonial violence against Indigenous peoples and restoring Indigenous laws, beliefs, values and traditions.

Lauretta Conklin Frederking has been appointed the principal and president of Brescia University College. Dr. Frederking will step out of her role as vice-principal and academic dean at Brescia and into her new position on Aug. 1. Before joining Brescia in 2018, she held several positions at the University of Portland, including professor, chair of the department of political science, director of the social justice program and associate provost. While provost, Dr. Frederking was a member of the president’s leadership cabinet and responsible for such initiatives as a new faculty orientation program and overhauling the new core curriculum.

Lakehead University announced the appointment of Michael den Haan as the university’s new vice-president, external relations. Most recently, Mr. den Haan was Simon Fraser University’s vice-president, advancement and alumni engagement. In his new role, he will be a member of Lakehead’s executive team and responsible for providing a comprehensive, integrated approach to communications, marketing and web development, advancement and philanthropy and alumni engagement. Mr. den Haan will join Lakehead on May 5.

Mount Allison University’s next dean of arts is Vicki St. Pierre, who will begin a five-year appointment on July 1. Dr. St. Pierre is a music professor and has served as interim dean of arts since July 1, 2020. She has taught at Mount Allison since 2015 and served as acting director of drama for a year before her time as interim dean of arts. She is a seasoned concert and opera singer and has sung on stages around the world.

Tahmena Bokhari has been appointed director of equity, diversity and inclusion at the Smith School of Business at Queen’s University. In this new role, Ms. Bokhari will lead the implementation of the school’s EDII Strategy and Action Plan and work to advance a culture of inclusion. She previously integrated anti-oppressive practices into the curriculum in teaching roles at Seneca, Sheridan and George Brown colleges and recently worked with incarcerated individuals from groups overrepresented in the criminal justice system in northern Ontario. She begins her appointment on May 10.

Harold Jansen will assume the role of interim university librarian at the University of Lethbridge on July 1. Dr. Jansen has been with U of Lethbridge since 1998 as a pollitical science instructor in the faculty of arts and science. Most recently, he served as associate dean for the faculty. Dr. Jansen has consistently been voted one of the most popular teachers on campus and is recognized for his research work on political party and election finance in Canada.

The University of Guelph announced that Dave Hargreaves is the university’s new associate vice-president, finance, after serving in the role on an interim basis since Oct. 2020. As associate vice-president, finance, he will manage the university’s treasury and investment operations, controllership, procurement and payment services, and the financial services that support researchers. Mr. Hargreaves, a chartered professional accountant, joined the U of Guelph in 2016 as its director of treasury operations.

Mount Royal University has named Linda Many Guns its associate vice-president, Indigenization and decolonization. In this new position, Dr. Many Guns will be the senior Indigenous leader at the university, providing direction to advance its Indigenization and decolonization commitments. She was previously a professor in the Indigenous studies department at the University of Lethbridge and uses traditional knowledge to inform her academic papers and projects. Dr. Many Guns, a Blackfoot woman, was born on the Tsuut’ina Nation and is registered at Siksika Nation, both within Alberta’s borders. She joins Mount Royal on May 1.
