Leslie Reid has been named interim vice-provost, teaching and learning, at the University of Calgary, from July 1, 2017 until June 30, 2018. Dr. Reid was associate dean, teaching and learning, in the faculty of science, a role she has held since 2012. She joined U of Calgary in 2001 as a teaching fellow in the department of geoscience. She was named a 3M National Teaching Fellow in 2011 and is a member of the Taylor Institute Teaching Academy.
Todd Mondor has been named vice-provost, graduate education, and dean, graduate studies, at the University of Manitoba. A professor in the department of psychology, Dr. Mondor arrived at U of Manitoba in 1999. He was appointed head of psychology in 2009 and became associate dean in the faculty of graduate studies in 2014. Since April 2016, Dr. Mondor has served as acting dean and vice-provost.
Lori Yarchuk has been appointed associate vice-president, marketing communications (external relations) at the University of Manitoba. A U of Manitoba alumna, Ms. Yarchuk joined the university in 2006 and most recently served as executive director of the marketing communications office. Prior to that, she oversaw marketing and advertising for the Province of Manitoba and other public and private sector organizations.
Gordon Binsted has been reappointed dean of the faculty of health and social development at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. Since his appointment in 2012, Dr. Binsted has focussed on program innovations across the faculty’s three schools and supporting significant increases in research intensity. He received his PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Alberta.
The University of British Columbia has reappointed Lindsay Gordon chancellor, effective July 1. Mr. Gordon has held the role since 2014. He was formerly president and CEO of HSBC Bank Canada, governor of the Business Council of B.C., member of the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and director of the C.D. Howe Institute. Mr. Gordon was the past chair of the campaign cabinet of the United Way of the Lower Mainland of B.C. and received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012.
St. Francis Xavier University has appointed Michael Boyd chair of the board of governors, effective July 1. Mr. Boyd is managing director and head, global mergers & acquisitions with CIBC World Markets. He has also worked at Merrill Lynch Canada Inc., BMO Nesbitt Burns Inc. and Boston Consulting Group. Mr. Boyd is a StFX alumnus and has served two terms on its board of governors.
The Canadian Association of Research Libraries has elected Donna Bourne-Tyson president for a two-year term, from 2017 to 2019. Ms. Bourne-Tyson is university librarian at Dalhousie University, a role she has held since 2011. Previously, she was university librarian at Mount Saint Vincent University.
Gracy Pardillo has been appointed Concordia University’s controller, effective Aug. 7. A chartered professional accountant with more than 28 years of experience in financial operations and management, Ms. Pardillo has worked in the university sector in a variety of roles, most recently as senior project director of finance and administration at McGill University’s faculty of medicine.
Royal Roads University has named Kathleen Birney its next chancellor and chair of the board of governors, as of June 13. Ms. Birney is a civil trial lawyer and senior counsel at the firm Cox Taylor, in Victoria. She has served on the board at Royal Roads since December 2013 and as the chair of the board’s governance and nominating committee since April 2016.
On Sept. 1, the University of British Columbia will welcome Susan Parker as university librarian. Ms. Parker currently holds the role of deputy university librarian at the University of California, Los Angeles. Ms. Parker will take over leadership of UBC Library at a pivotal time as the library develops new priorities in alignment with UBC’s new strategic plan.
The University of Saskatchewan has appointed Doug Brothwell dean of its College of Centistry, effective Sept. 1. Dr. Brothwell is currently the associate dean, academic, in the College of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba. His research interests include mental health status and treatment needs of disadvantaged Canadians, the relationship between fluoride ingestion, dental fluorosis and dental health, and smoking cessation and its effect on health.
Wilfrid Laurier University has named Sandra Palmaro interim vice-president of development and alumni relations, from July 10, 2017 to June 30, 2018. Ms. Palmaro has held senior roles in private and not-for-profit sectors, including co-CEO and CEO of the Ontario Region of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, executive vice-president of SickKids Foundation, and vice-president, public sector, at Microsoft Canada.
Memorial University has reappointed Greg Naterer for a second term as dean of the faculty of engineering and applied science, effective Aug. 1. He was first appointed dean in 2012. Dr. Naterer is a former chair of the discovery grant committee (mechanical engineering) of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council and past chair of the National Council of Deans of Engineering and Applied Science of Canada.
James Orbinski was named the inaugural director of the Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research at York University, starting Sept. 1. A professor, medical doctor, researcher and advocate, Dr. Orbinski was formerly the international president of Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders. He has advised the UN Security Council, the World Health Organization and the UNHCR, and was awarded the Meritorious Service Cross for humanitarian leadership in Rwanda during the 1994 genocide.
Concordia University named Christophe Guy its next vice-president, research and graduate studies, beginning Aug. 1. Since 2007, Dr. Guy was chief executive officer of École Polytechnique de Montréal. He is the co-founder of Odotech Inc., vice-president of the board of the Consortium for Research and Innovation in Aerospace in Quebec, and co-founder and vice-president of the board of the Canadian Aerospace Research and Innovation Consortium.
Trinity Western University has named Mat Marquez director of admissions for American markets, a new position tasked with building the awareness of the university in the United States. Mr. Marquez previously worked at Grand Canyon University, a private Christian University in Arizona, where he was the regional admissions manager and regional director of admissions operations for Southern California.
Jacqui Tam is the University of Alberta’s next vice-president of university relations, after serving in the position on an interim basis. Ms. Tam was director of public affairs and publications at Wilfrid Laurier University, and later served there as associate vice-president of communications, public affairs and marketing. She has also worked at the University of Lethbridge and the Newfoundland & Labrador Housing Corporation.
V. Wee Yong is the recipient of the 2017 J. Allyn Taylor International Prize in Medicine, awarded by Western University’s Robarts Research Institute. Dr. Yong is a world-leading multiple sclerosis researcher at the Cumming School of Medicine at the University of Calgary who has dedicated his career to understanding the disease and translating his lab findings into new treatments. He holds the Canada Research Chair in Neuroimmunology, co-directs the MS NeuroTeam of the Hotchkiss Brain Institute in Calgary and directs the Alberta MS Network. Most recently, Dr. Yong and his team have demonstrated that a common acne medication called minocycline delays the onset of MS for patients in the early stages of the disease.
Allyson Jule has been named dean of the school of education at Trinity Western University, effective Aug. 1. A faculty member in the department of English from 1993 to 2002, Dr. Jule returned to TWU to teach in the school of education in 2008 after a time in Wales. She is a 3M Teaching Fellow and is co-director of TWU’s gender studies. She also serves as current president of the national professional association, Women’s and Gender Studies et Recherches Féministes.
As of Aug. 1, Catharine Dishke Hondzel became the new director of Thomspon Rivers University’s Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching. Dr. Dishke Hondzel will also chair the senate teaching and learning committee. She previously served as coordinator of research and learning support at Huron University College, affiliated with Western University, where she helped found Huron’s Centre for Undergraduate Research Learning.
Ian Mishkel was appointed Ryerson University’s next vice-president, university advancement and alumni relations, effective July 31. He was previously executive director, principal gifts, at the University of Toronto. Prior to that, Mr. Mishkel was vice-president of business development at Sheridan College, manager of major gifts and planned giving at the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, and executive director of the TVOntario Foundation.
Serge Demers has been appointed interim vice-president, academic, and provost of Laurentian University, from July 1, 2017 until June 30, 2019. Dr. Demers is a full professor, registrar, secretary of the senate and associate vice-president, learning and teaching at Laurentian and is past chair of the Ontario University Registrars’ Association.
