The University of Waterloo has appointed Charmaine Dean vice-president, university research, beginning July 1. Dr. Dean is currently a professor and dean of the faculty of science at Western University. She was previously associate dean at Simon Fraser University and has served as president of the Statistical Society of Canada.
Brock University has appointed Alan Castle acting dean of the faculty of mathematics and science, effective Jan. 1. Dr. Castle is a geneticist who has been a faculty member in Brock’s department of biological sciences since 1987. He has also served as department chair and associate dean for graduate programs and research.
Queen’s University has appointed Barbara Crow dean of the faculty of arts and science, starting July 1. Dr. Crow will join Queen’s from York University, where she currently serves as dean and associate vice-president, graduate studies. She was previously a faculty member at the University of Calgary and is currently a co-principal investigator on the Ageing, Communication, and Technologies project.
Pilar Michaud has been appointed director, human rights and dispute resolution, at McMaster University. In her role, Ms. Michaud will oversee the investigation of formal complaints related to discrimination, harassment, sexual harassment and sexual violence. She joined McMaster in 2012 and has held the position of senior human rights officer.
McGill University’s new board chair will be Ram Panda, starting July 1. Mr. Panda graduated with a master’s in electrical engineering from McGill after emigrating from India. In 1978, he co-founded a software company now known as Invera Inc. Mr. Panda has been a member of McGill’s engineering faculty advisory board since 2007 and a member-at-large of the board of governors since 2014.
Vianne Timmons has been reappointed president and vice-chancellor of the University of Regina, with a third five-year term to begin July 1, 2018. Dr. Timmons has overseen the development and implementation of two strategic plans at U of R. She has thrice been named one of Canada’s “Top 100 Most Powerful Women” and received the Canadian Association for Education Psychology’s 2012 Carol Crealock Award in recognition of her life’s work in the field. Dr. Timmons holds a PhD in education psychology from the University of Calgary.
Wilfrid Laurier University has named Deborah MacLatchy its next president and vice-chancellor, beginning July 1. Dr. MacLatchy is a researcher and graduate supervisor specializing in ecotoxicology and comparative endocrinology. She holds a PhD in zoology from the University of Manitoba and did postdoctoral work at the University of Guelph before joining the University of Winnipeg and the University of New Brunswick. She joined Laurier in 2007 as dean of the faculty of science and has served as vice-president, academic, and provost since 2009. She was also acting vice-president, research, from 2014 to 2015.
Mary Bluechardt has been named Mount Saint Vincent University’s next president and vice-chancellor, effective July 1. Dr. Bluechardt is currently the vice-president of Memorial University’s Grenfell campus, where she has overseen the opening of an Aboriginal Student Centre and the appointment of an Aboriginal Student Services Officer, among other initiatives. Previously, Dr. Bluechardt served as dean of the faculty of health at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. She holds a PhD in exercise science and health promotion from the University of Toronto.
Ralph Nilson was reappointed president and vice-chancellor of Vancouver Island University for a third term, which began Jan. 1. Dr. Nilson’s tenure has seen the transition of the institution from Malaspina University-College to Vancouver Island University. Prior to joining VIU in 2007, he was vice-president, academic, at Acadia University, director of the Indigenous Peoples Health Research Centre at the First Nations University of Canada and dean of the faculty of kinesiology and health studies at the University of Regina.
Redeemer University College named Fred Verwoerd its interim president as the university plans to install a new president in September. Mr. Verwoerd previously served as vice-president, administration and finance, at Redeemer and serves as chair of the board of directors for the Ontario Alliance of Christian Schools. He is a chartered professional accountant and certified management accountant.
The University of Calgary has reappointed Lisa Young to the position of dean and vice-provost, graduate studies, effective July 1. Dr. Young was previously associate dean and interim dean. She holds a PhD in political science from the University of Toronto and joined U of C in 1997 as a faculty member.
Susan Barker has been reappointed vice-provost, student experience, at the University of Calgary. Dr. Barker holds a PhD from the University of Lancaster in England and was previously a professor in science and environmental education at the University of Alberta. She served as associate dean, undergraduate programs and services, in the faculty of education at U of A from 2008 to 2010.
On Nov. 28, Stephanie White began a new role as director of high-performance sport, recreation and physical literacy at Vancouver Island University. Ms. White had served as associate director at Ryerson University for the past five years and led a $100-million project to convert Maple Leaf Gardens into a new athletic facility. She has also coached women’s hockey at the international level at Hockey Canada.
Julie Horne will be the new director of human resources at King’s University College, affiliated with Western University, starting Jan. 9. Ms. Horne has 15 years of experience in HR, most recently as a manager at the Lawson Health Research Institute, London. She has also worked at St. Joseph’s Health Care, McCormick Canada and Electro-Motive Canada.
Éric Bauce, executive vice-rector, development, at Université Laval, was named the winner of a Clean 16 award for sustainable development, in the category of education and thought leadership. According to the citation, under Dr. Bauce’s leadership, “Université Laval has become a model for sustainable development integration, Québec’s first carbon neutral university campus, and Canada’s first university to voluntarily offset its carbon footprint.” Dr. Bauce set up the university’s first forest entomology laboratory in 1989 and over the course of his career has made important contributions to environmental science. He has served as executive vice-rector since 2007 and, in the course of his duties, introduced a management and development approach focused on sustainable development that has garnered many accolades for the university. The Clean 16 award is sponsored by Delta Management Group to honour “outstanding contributions to clean capitalism.”
Kim Pittaway has been named executive director of the MFA in Creative Nonfiction program at University of King’s College. Ms. Pittaway has been a mentor to writers in the program and was previously a consultant for Magazines Canada, president of the National Magazine Awards Foundation and editor-in-chief of Chatelaine. She currently sits on the board of the Writers’ Federation of Nova Scotia.
McGill University has named Yves Beauchamp its new vice-principal, administration and finance, effective Jan. 1. Dr. Beauchamp is an engineering professor and former director general of École de technologie supérieure. He recently completed a two-year secondment at the Université de Montréal, working on the university’s new Site Outremont satellite campus and science and engineering complex.
Martha Crago, currently vice-president, research, at Dalhousie University, will join McGill University as vice-principal, research and innovation, effective July 1. She completed three degrees at McGill, where she has also held roles as a senior administrator and professor in the school of communication sciences and disorders. Dr. Crago serves as chair of the U15 Research Committee of Vice-Presidents of Research.
David Eidelman has been reappointed McGill University’s vice-president, health affairs, and dean of the faculty of medicine, with a new term beginning July 1. Dr. Eidelman began his first term in 2012 and was previously chair of McGill’s department of medicine, director of the division of respiratory diseases and physician-in-chief at the McGill University Health Centre.
Anne Whitelaw is Concordia University’s new vice-provost of planning and positioning, as of Jan. 1. Dr. Whitelaw joined Concordia’s department of art history as an associate professor in 2011. She was previously associate dean of research for the faculty of fine arts.
Queen’s University has re-appointed Teri Shearer deputy provost, effective July 1. Dr. Shearer has served as chair of the Senate Committee on Academic Development and co-chair of the Queen’s National Scholar Program. She is an associate professor of accounting in the Smith School of Business.
Brenda Brouwer has accepted an extension of her term as vice-provost and dean of graduate studies at Queen’s University until June 30, 2018. Dr. Brouwer holds a PhD in neuroscience from the University of Toronto and was previously associate dean of the school of graduate studies at Queen’s from 2005 to 2010.
Queen’s University has re-appointed Jill Scott vice-provost, teaching and learning, effective July 1. Dr. Scott is a professor of gender studies and cultural studies. She teaches courses in German language acquisition, culture and literature, and she serves as co-chair of Queen’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission Task Force.
On Feb. 1, Erin Sargeant Greenwood will become Saint Mary’s University’s vice-president of advancement, a new role at the university. Ms. Greenwood has more than 20 years of experience in advancement and non-profit management, most recently serving as interim vice-president, advancement, at the University of Waterloo.
