The University of Lethbridge has named Kathleen Massey associate vice-president, students, as of Aug. 1. Ms. Massey will oversee the registrar’s office, enrolment services and student services. Prior to her new appointment, she served as registrar and executive director, enrolment services, at McGill University and previously worked at the University of Calgary, Centennial College and York University.
Lynn Lavallée will be the University of Manitoba’s inaugural vice-provost, Indigenous engagement, effective Sept. 1. She will also be an associate professor in the faculty of kinesiology and recreation management. Dr. Lavallée, who is Anishinaabe, was director of Ryerson’s school of social work, chaired the university’s research ethics board, and was instrumental in establishing Ryerson’s Aboriginal education council.
As of July 1, matthew heinz is the first vice-provost, research and interdisciplinary studies – a newly created position – at Royal Roads University. Dr. heinz joined Royal Roads in 2005 as an associate professor and director of the school of communication and culture. He became dean of the faculty of social and applied sciences in 2011 and founding dean of the college of interdisciplinary studies in 2016, a role he will continue to hold alongside his new appointment.
Brock University has named Gervan Fearon its next president and vice-chancellor, effective Aug. 1. Dr. Fearon has held several senior leadership roles at Canadian universities, most recently as president of Brandon University. He was previously dean of the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education at Ryerson University, associate dean at York University’s faculty of liberal and professional studies, visiting scholar at the University of Washington, and associate professor at York University. Dr. Fearon holds a PhD in economics from Western University. He is a chartered professional accountant whose career includes several years in the Ontario government as senior analyst in the Ministry of Finance and executive assistant to the deputy minister in the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs.
Brandon University has named Steven Robinson interim president, effective Aug. 1. Since 2015, Dr. Robinson has been vice-president, academic and provost, also serving as acting president as needed. He joined Brandon U’s department of philosophy in 1996 and was promoted to associate professor, serving three terms as chair of the department.
Todd Martin is the new dean of Trinity Western University’s faculty of humanities and social sciences, as of May 1. A faculty member since 2008, Dr. Martin brings experience as a pastor and financial advisor to his role, and most recently served as assistant dean alongside Dr. Myron Penner. Dr. Martin holds a doctor of philosophy in sociology of family from the University of British Columbia.
Concordia University appointed Anne-Marie Croteau dean of the John Molson School of Business, effective June 1. Dr. Croteau will be the first female dean of the JMSB. She is a professor in the department of supply chain and business technology management and a certified chartered director. She serves on the board of directors of the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and Hydro-Québec.
York University has reappointed Gregory Sorbara chancellor, effective June 14. Mr. Sorbara, formerly a long-serving member of provincial parliament, has held senior cabinet roles in the governments of Ontario premiers David Peterson and Dalton McGuinty. Mr. Sorbara holds a bachelor of arts from York’s Glendon campus, an LLB from York’s Osgoode Hall Law School, and an honorary doctor of laws from York U.
Sandra Gabriele became Concordia University’s vice-provost, innovation in teaching and learning, as of June 19. Dr. Gabriele joined Concordia in 2010 as an assistant professor in the department of communication studies and was promoted to associate professor in 2013 and department chair in 2015. In her role, she will oversee the activities of the Centre for Teaching and Learning among other duties.
Brock University has named Gary Comerford chair of its board of trustees, effective June 22. Mr. Comerford is a Niagara native and an international management and financial specialist. He was elected to the board in 2014 and chaired the advisory committee on the president this past year. Mr. Comerford is the CEO of Comerford Management Consultants and previously served in leadership roles at Canada Permanent Trust, Sun Life Canada, the Canada India Business Council and the Shaw Festival’s board.
Lynn Logan is the new vice-president (operations & finance) at Western University, as of June 22. Ms. Logan joined Western in 2006 and has served as associate vice-president (finance & facilities) and acting CFO. A chartered professional accountant, she has held leadership roles in the private and public sectors and currently chairs the United Way Elgin & Middlesex board. Ms. Logan holds an MBA from Western’s Ivey Business School.
Roseann O’Reilly Runte, who has served for nine years as president of Carleton University, leaves her post to become president and CEO of the Canada Foundation for Innovation on August 1. Dr. O’Reilly Runte was previously president of Université Sainte-Anne, Victoria College at the University of Toronto and Old Dominion University in Virginia, and principal of Glendon College at York University. Dr. O’Reilly Runte is a member of the Order of Canada and the French Order of Merit.
Carleton University has appointed Alastair Summerlee the university’s interim president and vice-chancellor, starting Aug. 1. Dr. Summerlee was president and vice-chancellor of the University of Guelph from 2003 to 2014. He previously served as dean of graduate studies as well as vice-president, academic, and provost at U of Guelph.
Edgar Schmidt has been appointed dean of education at Concordia University of Edmonton, effective July 1. Dr. Schmidt has extensive experience as a classroom teacher, principal, central office administrator and former superintendent of schools. Currently, his research and scholarly work are contributing to the development of a graduate-level program in the faculty of education. Dr. Schmidt will continue his role as adjunct professor in education policy studies at the University of Alberta.
CIFAR president and CEO Alan Bernstein is the recipient of the 2017 Henry G. Friesen International Prize in Health Research, in recognition of his institutional leadership and cancer research as a molecular biologist. Founded in 2005 by the Friends of Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the $35,000 Friezen Prize is awarded annually. Dr. Bernstein was previously director of research at the Samuel Lunenfeld Research Institute of Mount Sinai Hospital in Toronto, and inaugural president and CEO of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
Larry Chartrand has been appointed academic director of the Native Law Centre at the University of Saskatchewan, effective July 1. Dr. Chartrand is a professor at the University of Ottawa and previously served as director of the Aboriginal self-government program at the University of Winnipeg, Métis advisor to the Senate Standing Committee on Aboriginal Peoples and director of the Indigenous law program at the University of Alberta.
The University of New Brunswick has appointed Luigi Benedicenti dean of computer science. Dr. Benedicenti is professor and program chair at the University of Regina, where he has previously held positions as associate vice-president, academic, and associate dean of engineering. He is a fellow of Engineers Canada and a member of the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board.
Andrew Szeri has been named provost and vice-president, academic, for the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus, effective July 1. Dr. Szeri joins UBC from the University of California at Berkeley, where he was vice-provost for strategic academic and facilities planning, dean of the graduate division and professor in the department of mechanical engineering.
Western University has appointed Christine Stapleton director of sport and recreation services, starting July 3. Ms. Stapleton is the director of athletics at the University of Calgary and previously served as associate director, athletics, at the University of Waterloo. She coached the University of Regina’s women’s basketball team from 1993-2002 and won the 3M Canadian High Performance Coach of the Year in 2001.
Danielle Dunbar has been appointed associate vice-president of development and chief development officer in university relations at the University of Saskatchewan, effective July 4. Ms. Dunbar served as the acting associate vice-president, alumni and donor relations, at the University of Manitoba, where she has worked for the past 12 years. She is a graduate of the faculty of kinesiology and recreational studies at the U of M and holds her certified fundraising executive accreditation.
