Lesley Brown has been appointed Yukon University’s new president and vice-chancellor, effective Aug. 16. Dr. Brown was most recently provost and vice-president at Mount Royal University where she oversaw educational programming and research. Before her time at Mount Royal, she served as a faculty member and administrator in roles including interim vice-president, research, associate vice-president, research, and vice-provost, academic, at the University of Lethbridge. She has held positions with several national and provincial organizations, including the Social Science and Humanities Research Council, the research advisory committee and board of the Alberta Rural Development Network and the Alberta Epigenetics Network.
Camille Callison will join the University of the Fraser Valley as its new university librarian on July 1. A member of the Tsesk’iya clan of the Tāłtān First Nation in British Columbia, she has served as the Indigenous strategies librarian at the University of Manitoba since 2012. While in that role, Ms. Callison was involved in engaging and supporting Indigenous students, faculty and community, the founding of the Mazinbiige Indigenous graphic novel collection and the university’s Indigenous advisory circle. She is also currently pursuing a PhD in anthropology at the U of Manitoba that focuses on Indigenous knowledge and how cultural memory institutions contribute to its resurgence and revitalization.
Randall Heidt has been appointed Kwantlen Polytechnic University’s next vice-president, external affairs. Mr. Heidt was most recently vice-president, strategic initiatives, at North Island college. Before this, he served as executive director, external relations, at the College of New Caledonia. Mr. Heidt has also served as the city editor of the Prince George daily newspaper. He holds a master’s degree in leadership from Royal Roads University and a bachelor of applied communications from Mount Royal University.
Concordia University has appointed Anne Whitelaw as its new provost and vice-president, academic. She has held the position on an interim basis since July 2019 and will begin a five-year term in the role on July 1. Dr. Whitelaw joined Concordia’s department of art history as an associate professor in 2011 and has since served in several leadership positions, including deputy provost, vide-provost of planning and positioning, and associate dean of research in the faculty of fine arts. She is the past president of the Universities Art Association of Canada, a research fellow at the National Gallery of Canada and a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Rochester in New York.
The University of Northern British Columbia welcomes Catherine Wishart as the new chair of its board of governors. She has been a provincially appointed representative on the board since July 2020 and was recently reappointed for another two-year term. She is a consultant with public sector, First Nations and non-profit organizations on planning and development. Previously, she held a number of positions with the College of New Caledonia. She served as director of the Elizabeth Fry Housing Society in Prince George, was on the board of examiners of the British Columbia Association Forest Professionals and served as vice-chair of Community Futures Fraser Fort George.
Tracy Ryder Glass has been appointed vice-provost, academic, at the University of the Fraser Valley. Dr. Ryder has served as the university’s dean of professional studies since 2014 and, in her new role, will lead the development of UFV’s new strategic enrolment management plan, support opportunities for life-long learning and oversee external partnership opportunities. She holds six degrees – four bachelor’s degrees, a master of laws and a PhD in higher education. Dr. Glass will continue working as dean of professional studies until the end of September, when an interim dean will be appointed.
Claude Lacroix has been reappointed as the chair of Laurentian University’s board of governors. Mr. Lacroix is a Laurentian alumnus, having earned a bachelor’s degree from the university in 1991. He previously served as president of the Laurentian University Alumni Association, president of the Sudbury District Law Association, interim chair of Science North’s board of trustees, president of the Ontario French Speaking Trial Lawyers Association and executive member and director of the Greater Sudbury Development Corporation.
Brock University has named April-Dawn Blackwell as its first associate vice-president, professional and continuing studies. Ms. Blackwell will join Brock on July 26 from her current position as associate dean, pathways, at Humber College Institute for Technology and Advanced Learning. She also held similar roles at Conestoga College and Centennial College and has worked in continuing professional education in the private sector with BMO and the Canadian Management Centre.
The board of governors at St. Francis Xavier University has a new chair. Dennis Flood, director and portfolio manager at Scotia Wealth Management, has been appointed for a three-year term as chair beginning July 1. Mr. Flood has spent decades working in the financial services industry. He began at Citibank Leasing in 1986, moving to ScotiaMcLeod (now Scotia Wealth Management) where he held a variety of senior positions. Mr. Flood graduated from StFX in 1980 with a bachelor’s degree in economics.
