York University has reappointed Rhonda Lenton for an additional five-year term as its president and vice-chancellor. Her new term begins on July 1, 2022. During her first appointment, which began in 2017, Dr. Lenton guided the university through a series of major initiatives, which included growing strengths in interdisciplinary research and innovation, new health sector partnerships and international collaborations. Other achievements include securing support for York’s Markham campus and creating a new division of equity, people and culture to provide leadership for the university’s equity strategy. Dr. Lenton serves on the Universities Canada board of directors and research committee and is the vice-chair of the Council of Ontario Universities.
Carleton University announced the appointment of Nathasha Macdonald as its assistant vice-president, institutional research and planning. Ms. Macdonald began her new role on May 3 and is responsible for promoting and supporting institutional planning and evidence-based decision-making. She joined Carleton in 2005 as a senior analyst and later served as manager, institutional analysis. Since 2017, she has served as the university’s director, strategic analysis, planning and accountability in the office of institutional research and planning.
Tim Tang has been named MacEwan University’s next associate vice-president, students, effective June 1. Mr. Tang is currently the assistant registrar and director, admissions, at the University of Alberta and oversees the management and evaluation of annual admission for undergraduate and professional programs. Before this, he held positions at the University of Toronto, Queen’s University and York University. In his new role, Mr. Tang will be responsible for the planning, development, organization and administration of student-related policy and services.
The University of Manitoba announced that Diane Hiebert-Murphy will be its next provost and vice-president, academic, starting July 1. Dr. Hiebert-Murphy is a professor in the faculty of social work and the faculty of arts’ psychological service centre. Since 2016, she has served as vice-provost, academic affairs. Before this posting, she also served as associate dean, research and graduate programs, in the faculty of social work; associate dean in the faculty of graduate studies; vice-provost, academic affairs; and acting dean of the faculty of social work.
The University of Calgary will welcome Renate Weller to the position of dean of the university’s faculty of veterinary medicine on Sept. 1. Dr. Weller is currently the inaugural director of veterinary education at CVS Group plc, an integrated veterinary services provider in Europe. Before this role, she held several roles at Royal Veterinary College at the University of London, including associate dean for undergraduate teaching and professor, and professor of comparative imaging and biomechanics in the department of clinical sciences and services. She was awarded the United Kingdom Higher Education Academy’s national teaching fellowship and was recognized internationally for her contribution to clinical work with an admission to the Hall of Fame for Equine Veterinarians in the United States.
Lace Marie Brogden has been appointed dean of education at St. Francis Xavier University. Dr. Brogden served as the inaugural dean of the faculty of education at Laurentian University when it the French/English program was created in 2016. Her research and scholarship interests include language teacher education, social justice education and autoethnography. Dr. Brogden was elected a member-at-large in 2016 and 2018 to the Ontario Association of Deans of Education executive, was elected to the executive committee of the Association of Canadian Deans of Education in 2018 and is the organization’s current president-elect.
