The University of Saskatchewan has reappointed Grit McCreath as chancellor for a second term. The three-year appointment will run through July 1, 2025. Ms. McCreath has a longstanding connection to the university. She graduated from its College of Education 30 years ago, and has served as a member of the university senate and the board of governors, and as the university’s inaugural honorary ambassador. In 2019, she was named a recipient of the Saskatchewan Order of Merit.
Indigenous legal scholar Marion Buller has been named chancellor of the University of Victoria. Her three-year term begins on Jan. 1, 2022. Ms. Buller is a member of the Mistawasis Nêhiyawak Cree First Nation in Saskatchewan. In 1994, she became the first woman from the First Nations to be appointed a judge in British Columbia. Later, she created and presided in the First Nations Courts of B.C., now known as Indigenous Courts, and served as the chief commissioner for the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls national inquiry from 2016 to 2019.
The U15 Group of Canadian Research Universities has announced that Chad Gaffield will be its next executive director. His term will begin April 15, 2022. Dr. Gaffield is a distinguished university professor and professor of history emeritus at the University of Ottawa, where he also holds the university research chair in digital scholarship. He previously served as president of the Royal Society of Canada from 2017 to 2019, president and CEO of the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada from 2006 to 2014.
