Lakehead University announced that Jula Hughes will be the new dean of the university’s Bora Laskin Faculty of Law, beginning Oct. 1. Dr. Hughes comes to Lakehead from the University of New Brunswick, where she taught in the faculty of law and held a two-year appointment as university research scholar. She is also principal investigator of a community-driven, collaborative research project, “Looking out for each other: Assisting Aboriginal families and communities when an Aboriginal woman goes missing,” funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council and Status of Women Canada. Before teaching at UNB, she practised labour and human rights law in Ottawa and clerked for Justice Ian Binnie of the Supreme Court of Canada.
Lisa Kalynchuk became the University of Victoria’s vice-president, research, on July 1. Dr. Kalynchuk previously spent two years as UVic’s associate vice-president, research, where she focused on the launch of a health sciences initiative and oversaw the university’s research centres. She holds a BSc in psychology from the University of Alberta, and an MA and PhD in behavioural neuroscience from the University of British Columbia.
Justin Goodrich was elected chairperson of the University of the Fraser Valley’s board of governors, effective Aug. 1. Mr. Goodrich, a UFV alumnus, previously served as chairperson of the institution’s alumni association and was appointed to the board of governors in 2015. Mr. Goodrich is the managing partner of Alliance Public Affairs Group, a public affairs consulting firm.
Former Ontario cabinet minister Indira Naidoo-Harris was named the University of Guelph’s new associate vice-president, diversity and human rights, joining the university in mid-August. Ms. Naidoo-Harris was elected to the Ontario legislature in 2014 and held several cabinet roles in her time as an MPP, including minister of the status of women and minister of education. Before entering politics, Ms. Naidoo-Harris was a journalist and worked for both Canadian and international news outlets.
Craig Kuziemsky has been named MacEwan University’s next associate vice president, research, effective Sept. 1. Dr. Kuziensky comes to MacEwan after more than a decade at the University of Ottawa, where he has been a faculty member at the Telfer School of Management since 2007. He also served as director of the U of O’s master of health administration program.
Wilfrid Laurier University has appointed Maureen Mancuso its interim provost and vice-president, academic, effective Aug. 1. Dr. Mancuso joins Laurier after nearly three decades at the University of Guelph, where she served numerous roles, including provost and vice-president, academic. In 2011, she was named a 3M National Teaching Fellow, the country’s highest teaching award.
Acadia University alumna Laura Robinson returns to her alma mater as the university’s dean of arts for a six-year term that began July 1. Dr. Robinson received her BA at the university in 1998. Since 2016, she has served the founding dean of the school of the arts and social sciences at Memorial University’s Grenfell Campus.
Miles Turnbull has been reappointed vice-principal, academic, at Bishop’s University for a second five-year term, effective July 1. Dr. Turnbull will also be responsible for the research portfolio. Prior to his time at Bishop’s, Dr. Turnbull served as dean of the faculty of education at the University of Prince Edward Island.
Aoife Mac Namara is the new president of NSCAD University, starting Aug. 4. Dr. Mac Namara was previously dean of Simon Fraser University’s faculty of communication, art and technology. In her 30-year career in arts education, she has worked in academic institutions in the United Kingdom and Canada, including University of Arts, London, Middlesex University, and Emily Carr University of Art + Design.
MacEwan University has named John McGrath the university’s acting president. He will hold the office until MacEwan’s new president is appointed in early 2020. Dr. McGrath has held a variety of leadership roles in higher education over his 30-year career, including vice-president, information and communication systems, and chief information officer at MacEwan.
Current vice-president, academic, Bob Kayseas has been appointed interim president of First Nations University of Canada, effective July 1. Dr. Kayseas obtained his MBA from the University of Regina and his PhD in enterprise and innovation from the Australian Graduate School of Entrepreneurship, Swinburne University of Technology.
St. Francis Xavier University has appointed Sandy Iverson university librarian, starting Aug. 1. Dr. Iverson is currently vice-president/president-elect of the Canadian Health Libraries Association and is a founding member of their leadership institute working group. Most recently, she worked at St. Michael’s Hospital at the University of Toronto, where she led health information and knowledge programs.
Wilfrid Laurier University has appointed Heidi Northwood senior executive officer of the university’s Brantford campus. Dr. Northwood has served in the role on an interim basis since April 2018. She joined Laurier in 2014 as dean of the faculty of liberal arts before taking on the additional role of interim SEO. Prior to that, she was the director of integrative programs and the core curriculum at Nazareth College in Rochester, New York, and a professor in the philosophy department.
Global Security expert Ann Fitz-Gerald has been named the next director of the Balsillie School of International Affairs for a five-year term that began Aug. 1. Prior to her appointment, Dr. Fitz-Gerald was a professor at Cranfield University’s School of Defence and Security at the Defence Academy of the United Kingdom. Prior to engaging in an academic career, Dr. Fitz-Gerald worked in the financial services sector, the Lester B. Pearson Canadian International Peacekeeping Training Centre and NATO Headquarters in Brussels.
Kate McCrae Bristol becomes the dean of students at Wilfrid Laurier University, effective Sept. 16. Before that, Ms. McCrae Bristol served as manager of student experience at the University of Waterloo, where she was responsible for strategy and oversight of all new student transition and student development programming. She also worked as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Yale University and as national sports program manager for the Special Olympics Canada.
Concordia University welcomes France Bigras as its new chief information officer and associate vice-president of information systems, effective Sept. 30. Most recently, Ms. Bigras held the position of vice-president of information technology for Société GRICS. She also served as executive director of information technology at CBC/Radio-Canada, and as the vice-president of business intelligence and data management at the National Bank of Canada.
Mount Allison University welcomed its new university librarian, Dianne Keeping, to campus on Aug. 7. Dr. Keeping comes to Mount Allison after holding positions at Mount Royal University, Memorial University, the College of the North Atlantic and with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador. She holds a PhD from the University of Bradford in England, an MLIS from Dalhousie University and a BA from Memorial University.
