Deverell

Lakehead University announced that Rita Shelton Deverell has been named its next chancellor. Dr. Deverell has worked as a broadcaster, television producer, journalist, theatre artist and journalism professor. She was appointed to the Order of Canada in 2005 for her work in broadcasting. She has received many other accolades, including two Gemini Awards and the Black Women’s Civic Engagement Network Leadership Award. Dr. Deverell is currently a trustee of the Royal Ontario Museum, a member of the board of directors of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation and an adjunct professor of women’s studies at Mount Saint Vincent University and of education at Lakehead. Dr. Deverell is the first person of colour to hold the chancellor position at Lakehead and will be formally installed in the role at the university’s convocation in 2022.

Kathleen Massey has been reappointed for a second five-year term as the University of Lethbridge’s associate vice-president, students. Ms. Massey came to U of Lethbridge from McGill University and previously held positions at the University of Calgary, Centennial College and York University. During her first term, Ms. Massey oversaw a revision of the campus sexual violence policy, the development of online resources to support the 2SLGBTQ+ community and co-hosted the university’s TEDxULeth 2020 event. Ms. Massey’s new appointment begins July 1, 2022.

The University of Toronto has announced the appointment of Peter Loewen as the new director of the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Dr. Loewen, a leading political scientist, is currently the Munk School’s director of global engagement and director of the Policy, Elections and Representation Lab. He begins his new role on Nov. 1. Dr. Loewen came to the University of Toronto in 2010 to teach in the department of political science and served as the director of the university’s school of public policy and governance from 2016 until it amalgamated with the Munk School. He has also held visiting positions at the University of Melbourne, Princeton University and Stanford University.
