Samantha Brennan

The University of Guelph has named Samantha Brennan dean of the College of Arts, starting Jan. 1, 2018. Dr. Brennan is currently a professor of women’s studies and feminist research at Western University, where she also served as a founding member of the Rotman Institute of Philosophy. She is president of the Canadian Philosophical Association and co-founder and a co-editor of Feminist Philosophy Quarterly.

Brock University’s next vice-president, research, is Tim Kenyon, effective Jan. 1, 2018. Dr. Kenyon is a philosophy professor and associate dean of arts (research) at the University of Waterloo. He joined U of Waterloo in 2000 and has received the university’s Distinguished Teacher Award and Outstanding Performance Award. He is also a past-president of the Canadian Philosophy Association.

Rebecca Graham has been reappointed the University of Guelph’s university librarian, effective Sept. 1. Ms. Graham joined U of Guelph in 2012 from Harvard College Library in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She was also co-director of Harvard Medical School’s Countway Library of Medicine, and headed computing services and the digital library program at Johns Hopkins University.

Irena Creed will lead the University of Saskatchewan’s school of environment and sustainability, starting Sept. 1. Dr. Creed is a biology professor who holds cross appointments in the departments of geology and earth sciences at Western University, where for the past 10 years she has held a Canada Research Chair in Watershed Sciences.

St. Paul’s University College, affiliated with the University of Waterloo, has named JP Gladu its next chancellor. Mr. Gladu is the president and CEO of the Canadian Council for Aboriginal Business. He is Anishinaabe from Thunder Bay and has more than two decades of experience in the natural resource sector. Mr. Gladu serves on the boards of Ontario Power Generation and Noront Resources and is a member of the public advisory panel of the Canadian Electricity Association.

The University of Saskatchewan appointed HM (Huey-Ming) Tzeng dean of the college of nursing, effective Sept. 15. Dr. Tzeng is joining U of S from her post as dean of the Whitson-Hester School of Nursing at the Tennessee Technological University.

 Ted Dodds returns to the University of Guelph to become interim chief information officer, starting Sept 1. Mr. Dodds heads an IT consulting firm for the higher education sector. His previous roles have included CIO and vice-president, information technologies, at Cornell University; vice-provost, information technology at the University of British Columbia; director of computing services at the University of Windsor; and assistant director of academic and application services at U of Guelph.

David Barnett was reappointed dean of Lakehead University’s faculty of engineering, a role he took on in July 2012. Prior to joining Lakehead, Dr. Barnett spent several years in the aerospace industry. After completing his doctoral studies, he joined the electrical engineering department at Saint Louis University, where he later became chair of the biomedical engineering department.

Meric Gertler has been reappointed president of the University of Toronto for a second term that runs until June 30, 2023. He began his initial term as president in 2013. Between 2008 and 2013, he served as dean of the university’s faculty of arts and science. Dr. Gertler is a professor of geography and planning and holds the Goldring Chair in Canadian Studies.

Marcus Shantz becomes the next president of Conrad Grebel University College, affiliated with the University of Waterloo, starting Oct. 1. Dr. Shantz is currently president of Mercedes Corp., a property management company based in St. Jacobs, Ontario. He was previously served on the board of Grebel.

Claire Kennedy has been appointed chair of the governing council at the University of Toronto. Ms. Kennedy is a distinguished tax partner at Bennett Jones LLP in Toronto. She also serves as director of the Bank of Canada and of Alamos Gold Inc. Ms. Kennedy has served as a governor at the U of T since 2012.

Jennifer Burns was reappointed chief information officer and appointed associate vice-president of information technology at the University of British Columbia, effective July 1. Ms. Burns accepted the role of CIO at UBC in 2015. Ms. Burns has been in management for over 20 years, 14 of which were in higher education IT delivery.

On July 1, Robert Helsley was reappointed dean of the faculty of commerce, in the Sauder School of Business, at the University of British Columbia. He served as senior associate dean, faculty and research, from 2002 to 2008, director of the UBC Centre for Real Estate and Urban Economics, and chair of the urban land economics division.

The University of British Columbia named Mary MacDougall dean of the faculty of dentistry, effective Aug. 1. Dr. MacDougall was a professor and associate dean in the school of dentistry at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where she held the James R. Rosen Chair of Dental Research. She was also director of the Institute of Oral Health Research and the Dental Academic Research Training Program.

Gail Murphy began a new role on Aug. 14 as vice-president, research and innovation, at the University of British Columbia. Dr. Murphy is a professor of computer science and previously served as associate vice-president, research, on an interim basis at UBC. She is the co-founder and chief scientist at Tasktop Technologies Inc.

Murali Chandrashekaran was appointed vice-provost, international, at the University of British Columbia, effective Sept. 1. Dr. Chandrashekaran previously served as senior associate dean, strategic partnerships and global initiatives, in the Sauder School of Business at UBC. He joined the school in 2011 as director of the Robert H. Lee Graduate School and associate dean, professional graduate programs.

As of Aug. 1, Cathy Warner is the new board chair of the University of Regina. Ms. Warner was appointed to the board in 2013. She has worked for Deloitte for 27 years and currently serves as director of audit for Saskatchewan and Manitoba. A member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Saskatchewan, she was formerly president of the MacKenzie Art Gallery and finance chair of the Canada Games.

Brandon University named Meir Serfaty its acting vice-president, academic, and provost, effective Aug. 1, for a one-year term. One of BU’s most experienced educators, Dr. Serfaty joined the university in 1973. He has taught in the department of political science and has served as vice-president, academic and research, from 1986 to 1992.

Cindy Forbes is the new board chair of at the University of Waterloo for a three-year term. She is a fellow of the Society of Actuaries and the Canadian Institute of Actuaries and is currently executive vice-president and chief analytics officer at Manulife Financial. Ms. Forbes graduated with a bachelor of mathematics from U of Waterloo and joined the board of governors in 2012.

St. Thomas University appointed Susan Machum dean of social sciences. Dr. Machum is an associate professor and chair of the department of sociology. She graduated from St. Thomas and earned an MA from Dalhousie University and a PhD from the University of Edinburgh. She returned to St. Thomas in 2000 and held the Canada Research Chair in Rural Social Justice from 2006 to 2016.

Micheál Kelly was reappointed dean of the Lazaridis School of Business and Economics at Wilfrid Laurier University, effective July 1. Dr. Kelly joined Laurier in 2012 from the University of Ottawa, where he was a professor and former dean of the Telfer School of Management. He serves on the boards of Economical Insurance, the Canadian Advanced Technology Alliance and Waterloo North Hydro.

Wilfrid Laurier University named Gohar Ashoughian university librarian, effective July 1. Ms. Ashoughian joined Laurier in August 2012 after serving as university librarian at the University of Northern British Columbia; associate university librarian, collection services and assessment, at the University of Regina; and manager of library, learning commons and information technology at University of Guelph-Humber.

Robert Bailey was named interim provost and vice-president, academic, at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Dr. Bailey had been UOIT’s acting provost since April. He joined the university in 2015 as associate provost, arriving from Cape Breton University where he was provost and vice-president, academic and professional studies.

Douglas Holdway is the interim vice-president, research, innovation and international at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. A marine biologist, Dr. Holdway was a researcher in Australia, first with the Alligator Rivers Region Research Institute and later with the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. Upon returning to Canada, he joined UOIT’s faculty of science and, in 2004, was named to the university’s first Canada Research Chair, in aquatic toxicology.

Chris Andersen is the University of Alberta’s new dean of the faculty of Native studies, effective July 1. Dr. Andersen joined U of A in 2000, becoming a full professor in 2014. He holds a PhD in sociology from U of A and his research examines racialized understandings of Indigeneity in Canadian courts and the broader society. He was inducted into the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists in 2014.

The University of Ottawa’s new board chair is Kathryn Butler Malette, whose two-year term began July 1. Ms. Butler Malette has been a member of the board since 2007 and vice-chair since 2012. An alumna of U of Ottawa, she is a retired chief human resources officer for the House of Commons of Canada. Ms. Butler Malette is a member of the Canadian College of Health Leaders, the Institute of Corporate Directors, the Canadian Hospice Palliative Care Association and the Human Resources Professionals Association (Ontario).

As of July 1, Joshua Barker is the new dean of the school of graduate studies at the University of Toronto and vice-provost of graduate research and education. He was previously vice-dean, graduate education, in the faculty of arts and science at U of T. An associate professor, Dr. Barker has research expertise in urban and political anthropology, and science and technology studies, focusing primarily on Indonesia.

Larry Hachey, president of Bluechip Leasing Atlantic, is the new chair of the University of New Brunswick’s board of governors for a two-year term, effective July 1. Mr. Hachey has served on UNB’s Board of Governors since 2011, most recently serving as vice-chair.

Leonard Waverman was reappointed dean of McMaster University’s DeGroote School of Business, as of July 1. Dr. Waverman has been dean since 2013 and before that was dean of the University of Calgary’s Haskayne School of Business. He holds a PhD from MIT and was an economics professor at the University of Toronto and London School of Business. He is on the academic advisory board of Columbia University’s Centre for Tele-Information and is a former director of BNP Paribas (Canada) and the C.D. Howe Institute.

The University of Saskatchewan has named Steven Jones executive director of its school of public health, effective Sept. 1. Dr. Jones is the CEO of Cognoveritas Consulting Inc. and senior advisor to McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm. He was formerly an adjunct professor of immunology at the University of Manitoba and previously worked at Health Canada and the Public Health Agency of Canada.

The University of British Columbia has reappointed Deborah Buszard deputy vice-chancellor and principal of UBC’s Okanagan campus. During her first term, Dr. Buszard created a campus masterplan to 2030 and established an innovation precinct for industry collaboration. Prior to joining UBC in 2012, Dr. Buszard worked at Dalhousie University and McGill University.

Bryce Traister will serve as the next dean of the faculty of creative and critical studies at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. Dr. Traister joins UBC from Western University, where he served as chair of the department of English and writing studies from 2011 to 2016. He holds a PhD in English from the University of California at Berkeley.

Roger Sugden has been reappointed dean of the faculty of management at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus. Since joining UBC in 2012 from the University of Stirling in Scotland, Dr. Sugden’s accomplishments include transforming the delivery of UBC’s bachelor of management program and establishing a research institute specializing in regional socio-economic development.

Gillian Henderson has joined the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan campus as director, human resources. She joins UBC from Lakeland College, in Alberta, where she was vice-president, corporate services.

The University of Alberta appointed Greta Cummings dean of the faculty of nursing, effective July 1. Dr. Cummings has been a faculty member since 2004 and currently holds a Centennial Professorship, one of the university’s highest honours. She was named to the International Nurse Researcher Hall of Fame by the Sigma Theta Tau International Honour Society of Nursing in 2015, and is a fellow of both the American Academy of Nursing and the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.

Ulrich Krull is the new vice-president and principal of the University of Toronto Mississauga, effective July 1. A professor of analytical chemistry, Dr. Krull served in the position on an interim basis since 2016. Prior to that, he was vice-principal, special initiatives, associate dean of sciences, vice-dean, graduate, and vice-principal, research, at UTM. He serves on the board of the Research Innovation Commercialization Centre and has received honours including the Faculty Teaching Excellence Award at the UTM.

Kathleen Kwan will be the new Western University secretary, effective this September. Ms. Kwan was director of legal services and university solicitor at the University of Hertfordshire, in the U.K. Prior to that, she spent a decade as a solicitor with Mills & Reeve LLP in Cambridge, U.K. and served as secretary of Ryerson’s academic council and as judicial officer at the University of Guelph.

Roy Pogorzelski has been appointed director for the Iikaisskini (Low Horn) FNMI Gathering Place at the University of Lethbridge. Mr. Pogorzelski, a traditional Métis from Saskatchewan, is an inclusion consultant with the City of Lethbridge. He has chaired the reconciliation committee of the City of Lethbridge and was recently appointed by Heritage Minister Mélanie Joly to a four-year term as a director for the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.
