University Affairs seeks a professor who writes well and has lots to say about university life.
This is a guest post by my colleague Peggy Berkowitz, editor of University Affairs.
Are you a full-time faculty member at a Canadian university who makes endless mental notes about your work and the university environment, and who likes to write for a broad audience? If so, we may have a j...

So you want to be a “____” when you grow up series for the year. As Dave mentioned, this series has gotten a lot of positive feedback and we plan to bring it back again next summer, so if you have suggestions for career ideas you would like us to write about (or would like to write one your...

My first introduction to the world of project management as a field was in my previous job, when I took an intro to project management workshop offered. After taking the workshop, I really wished I'd learn about this field during my PhD instead of after it, because the concepts and method...

A new report by the Council of Canadian Academies (CCA) affirms Canada’s historical strength in ocean science.
Oceans control weather and environment, and provide a wealth of goods and services upon which humanity depends. Canada is shaped by the ocean, with three major ocean basins and the longest coastline in the world. Oceans have a significant impact on our communities and our livelihood. So it is both i...

The Black Hole

It’s already clear that the BSc is the new high school diploma (soon to be overtaken by a Masters), and undergraduate students are being told that they can do whatever they want and should leave as many doors open as possible . So, it seems a reasonable course of action to stay in school and get that extra degree that will allow you to not close doors. This line of thinking, however, also leads to a problem of too many degrees being sought and obtained for the wrong reasons. There is a lot to be said for the value of getting out there and gaining work experience and Beth continues to probe the different types of careers available… but that’s not what concerns me in this entry… (and I’m definitely not playing the “over-qualified card” because that is a load of nonsense… you can never be over-qualified)… What concerns me here is “Why do we sign up for the next degree?”

There’s little evidence that automatic entrance scholarships persuade students to accept an offer of admission. Could the funds be better spent elsewhere?
It’s the message she’s been hoping for. There’s a whoop of joy, a happy dance and texts fired off to parents and friends announcing the good news.
A young person has been accepted into her university of choice and offered a few thousand dollars in scholarship money to sweeten the deal. ...
