Social Work - Assistant or Associate Professor

The School of Social Work in the Faculty of Education and Health at Laurentian University invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor in Social Work. The preferred start date is January 1, 2026.
Laurentian University, located on Atikameksheng Anishnawbek territory in Sudbury, Ontario, serves over 8000 students and is one of two bilingual universities in the province of Ontario. Committed to its bilingual, tricultural mandate, Laurentian University offers an outstanding university experience in English and French with a comprehensive approach to Indigenous education. Laurentian’s beautiful, forested campus is surrounded by fresh-water lakes, conservation lands and hundreds of kilometres of cross-country and hiking trails while situated in the geographic centre of Greater Sudbury, northern Ontario’s major urban centre (population 160,000). Laurentian University has close and productive ties to Science North, NOSM University, SNOLAB, Health Sciences North and multiple post-secondary institutions. Laurentian is also home to the Maamwizing Indigenous Research Institute.
Candidates must have a completed (or nearly completed) PhD in social work or a related discipline with an MSW degree. An interest in contributing to academic leadership is preferred. Bilingualism in English and French would be an asset. An on-campus presence is required.
The successful candidate will have the following essential qualifications:
- Evidence of an active research program and/or in-depth practice experience expertise in direct social work practice, including an interest in the facilitation of seminars focused on practice integration and field placement learning;
- Experience in some of the following areas of practice or scholarship: anti-racism practice, Indigenous social work practice, gerontology, mental health, substance use, practice with Francophone and newcomer populations, practice with people with disabilities, and/or other areas of social work practice;
- Demonstrated excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels (campus and/or on-line) in English;
- A demonstrated commitment to social justice scholarship and/or transformative practices that actively dismantle anti-Indigenous racism, anti-Black racism, and intersecting forms of systemic oppression through teaching, and/or research, and/or practice. This would include a critical analysis of colonial, racial, and structural violence within and across communities, and the ways these violence produce and sustain disproportionate social and health inequities;
- Experience working with communities in practice and/or research, centering community-led approaches, community knowledge, and the strengths of marginalized communities;
- Experience mentoring and supporting graduate students and the ability to undertake thesis and practice supervision;
- Experience working collaboratively in a team environment and an enthusiasm for contributing to the governance University as a whole, and of the School of Social Work (including program coordination and the director role);
- A clear commitment to pedagogical and academic excellence; promoting a safe, inclusive, and welcoming learning environment; and advancing Laurentian University’s bilingual and tricultural mandates.
