Carleen Thomas, an educator and former council member for the Tsleil-Waututh Nation, has been appointed the new chancellor at Emily Carr University. Ms. Thomas is currently the special projects manager for the treaty, lands and resources department for the Tsleil-Waututh Nation and sits on the Indigenous advisory and monitoring committee of the federally created Trans Mountain expansion project. Ms. Thomas has also worked for the North Vancouver and Burnaby school districts as a district resource teacher in Indigenous education and has sat on the Burnaby school district’s Aboriginal advisory committee.
Wilfrid Laurier University announced that Jonathan Newman’s responsibilities in his role as vice-president, research, are expanding. Mr. Newman will now lead strategic innovation and entrepreneurship activities and oversee the development of Laurier’s inaugural innovation and entrepreneurship strategy. Previously, Mr. Newman served as the dean of the College of Biological Science at the University of Guelph and a faculty member in the zoology department at the University of Oxford.
