Job Summary
The University of the Fraser Valley invites applications for a full-time faculty member in its School of Education which includes undergraduate level pre-requisite courses; a 10 ½ month post-degree Bachelor of Education (BEd) for prospective elementary, middle, and secondary teachers; a Master of Education (MEd) in Educational Leadership and Mentorship; an Early Childhood Education (ECE) Certificate; and an Inclusive Education Assistant (IEA) Certificate and programs under development. Classes primarily occur on the Mission campus. The School of Education is committed to anti-racism, social justice, decolonization, and Indigenization and these commitments are incorporated into every course and program. Our graduates are valued as educators because of their strong ability to integrate educational theory and knowledge into a reflective teaching practice that is critically minded, pedagogically sensitive, and socially just.
The successful applicant will be expected to both: (a) teach courses in the School of Education programs (e.g., ECE, IEA, BEd, or MEd); and (b) provide educational and developmental academic advising services and events to support workplace readiness to current students considering entry into an educational profession, current students working through the programs, and to alumni as they transition into the field. The successful applicant would be expected to coordinate admission processes; liaison with the field and external agencies; support transfer articulation of courses; provide guidance and support to program and policy development, revision, and implementation; work collaboratively with a variety of faculty, sessional instructors, and staff; sustain ongoing research and scholarship in education-related areas; and, hold instructing responsibilities in the School. There are also additional expectations involving service to the university and the local community. This is a position for an educator who enjoys the challenge of working in an innovative School, and whose philosophy about education is consistent with the mission statement and values of the School of Education. This individual will also share the School’s commitments to social justice and anti-racism, and to decolonizing and Indigenizing practices. As such, the successful candidate would have knowledge of the School’s values and commitments and will embed them into their curriculum design and delivery.
Qualifications
- PhD or EDD in teacher education or early childhood education.
- Lived experience as or with superdiverse identities or communities.
- Minimum of five years of academic advising experience in a post-secondary environment.
- Experience with Indigenizing and decolonizing education.
- Evidence of public post-secondary instruction in teacher education, early childhood education, or inclusive education assistant programs.
- Evidence of experience in mentorship.
- Active research interest in teacher education, early childhood education, educational leadership/mentorship, and/or inclusive education.
- Evidence of experience and/ or scholarship oriented towards a progressive vision of education that is inclusive and committed to social justice, anti-racism, decolonization, Indigenization, critical thinking, reflective practice, pedagogical sensitivity, and the integration of knowledge and practice.
- Evidence of strong judgement/application of ethical decision-making; conflict resolution; applying due process/university policy/professional standards (e.g., FOIPPA regulations); well-organized/time management; and maintaining strong relationships with multiple external stakeholders.
- Ability to contribute to innovative program development.
- Evidence of ability to work collaboratively, inclusively, and respectfully within a team environment.
- Evidence of developmental approach to academic advising, career coaching and/or counselling experience to provide student support.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs; familiarity with appointment booking software, Banner, Degree Works, online video conferencing platforms, and learning management systems is an asset.
- Preference will be given to those applicants that can teach in the MEd, BEd, ECE Certificate, IEA Certificate, and/or future programmatic plans (e.g., 5+ Certificates).
