Criminology - Assistant Professor (Policing and Social Regulation of Black, Indigenous, Persons of Colour)

Trent University invites applications for a tenure track faculty position in Criminology with a focus on Policing and Social Regulation of Black, Indigenous, Persons of Colour (BIPOC). This is a new post for an Assistant Professor-level faculty position for the Criminology BA degree offered within the Department of Sociology. The position will start July 1, 2025, is to be located at Trent’s Peterborough campus and is subject to budgetary approval.

The Department of Sociology offers research informed, pedagogically innovative and community engaged undergraduate programs in Trent’s faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. The successful candidate will contribute to the Department’s areas of strength and specializations in criminology, socio-legal studies, health equity, and social justice. Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Criminology, Sociology or a closely related field. The successful candidate will have demonstrated experience and potential for excellence in research, teaching and service commensurate with the Assistant Professor rank. Responsibilities will include contributing to online course development and teaching in the Department of Sociology’s Criminology Program. Course options include Introductory Criminology and Sociology, research methods and data analysis. The successful candidate will show evidence of a developing high quality research program, including grant applications to Canada’s federal funding agencies (SSHRC, CIHR) and elsewhere. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to teach courses at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to develop new courses in their area of focus.

Applications should include a cover letter and curriculum vitae (including confirmation to legally work in Canada); a research statement and examples of significant scholarship; a teaching portfolio including a teaching philosophy statement and evidence of teaching effectiveness particularly in online courses, such as syllabi and a summary of teaching evaluations; a statement about how they would support students’ experiential learning in the Criminology field; and the names and contact information of three (3) referees who may be contacted to support the application.
