About the position
The Faculty of Adventure Studies, Culinary Arts and Tourism Management (FACT) at Thompson Rivers University (TRU) invites applications for a full-time Limited Term position at the rank of Assistant Teaching Professor in the Culinary Arts Department. This is a bipartite position with a preferred starting date of August 1st, 2025. The position, based on the Kamloops campus, involves teaching (including the scholarship of teaching and learning), structured hands-on instruction and a commitment to various forms of services.
Thompson Rivers University campuses are on the traditional lands of the Tk'emlúps te Secwépemc (Kamloops campus) and the T’exelc (Williams Lake campus) within Secwépemc'ulucw, the traditional and unceded territory of the Secwépemc people. The Culinary Arts program at TRU is one of the top Culinary Schools in Canada. The successful candidate should exhibit strong administrative abilities and understand that classroom activities will not be their primary focus. Their role will involve interacting with other departments, administrators, and faculty to develop and provide opportunities for growth while fostering an excellent experience for students. Emphasis should be placed on the holistic development of the department for overall success, rather than on individual pathways.
The role includes evaluating student progress and facilitating student achievement. Providing ongoing support, guidance and advice to learners and liaising with relevant industry sectors to promote engagement with program participants is required. Being a student-centered instructor, you will be able to instruct all levels of the Professional Cook programs, culinary diploma level courses and successfully instruct a combination of practical and theory-based classroom scenarios. Expert knowledge of all cooking methods and styles practiced in leading food service establishments is required. Clear and concise understanding of safe and hygienic food handling practices is imperative. Sound skills in classical and contemporary plate presentation as well as cold and hot food production are expected. Computer literacy and competence with online delivery is expected. Successful candidates must provide proof of qualifications.
Duties
- Prepare, organize, and teach classroom courses in a variety of topics such as but not limited to: Soups, stocks and sauces, meat cutting, baking and desserts, Garde manger, vegetarian cuisine, protein cooking, and fine dining. Committed to an emphasis on decolonization, the ability to appropriately incorporate indigenous products and preparation methods could be advantageous.
- All of these courses are taught at introductory and advanced levels; all involve a service component. The final teaching assignment will depend on the educational and professional background of the successful candidate.
- Prepare, organize, instruct, and execute special events organized by the culinary department.
- Mentor and advise students.
- Support student achievement in living classrooms
- Lead and participate in department administrative and service duties.
- Perform duties as required by the department for special projects as assigned by the department chairperson.
Qualifications
- Red Seal Certification
- Relevant Bachelor’s degree or BC Instructors diploma or equivalent.
- Graduate of a formal Culinary Arts program. Relevant industry experience required including 5 years in a leadership role. Marked and demonstrated professional growth.
- Classroom and lab teaching experience, with a demonstrated ability to be innovative
- Current Food Safe Certification
Pay Band & Benefits
The salary range for this position is $73,666 - $114,124, placement on the Salary Scale is in accordance with the Collective Agreement between TRU and TRUFA. This position offers an annual Professional Development Allowance, participation in a Defined Pension Plan and 100% employer paid benefits, which includes extended health & dental, sick leave and short term and long term disability.
