Position Description
The McGill University Department of Family Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences is inviting applications for a full time position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor (Tenure Track) based at the St- Mary’s Research Centre. The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. The Department of Family Medicine and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences will support the successful applicant’s appointment to the McGill Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine at the St. Mary’s Research Centre.

Current active areas of investigation include health services and policy, knowledge translation, public health, medical education, global health, information technology, qualitative research in health, clinical care, and biostatistics in primary care. With graduate programs at both the Masters and PhD levels, we are methodological leaders in participatory and mixed-methods research with a demonstrated record of national and international leadership with extensive collaborations with other departments and faculties. Our twelve urban and rural university family medicine groups, with over 140,000 registered patients, provide an opportunity to bridge the gap between research, education, and clinical practice.

The McGill Research Chair in Family and Community Medicine is based at the St-Mary’s Research Centre, an integral part of St. Mary’s Hospital CIUSSS-ODIM (Centre intégré universitaire de santé et de services sociaux de l’Ouest-de-l’île-de-Montréal), a major teaching hospital affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec.

The St-Mary’s Hospital serves a multicultural patient population in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood of Montreal and has strong links with the community. The Centre has been a pioneer in primary care research for more than three decades, with a strong commitment to fostering patient-centered research and healthcare innovation. The St-Mary’s Research Centre is currently in a period of growth, hosting seven full scientists, thirty- four associate scientists, and nine affiliate scientists. This robust network is further supported by eighteen graduate and post-graduate trainees and forty research professionals.

Job Duties
The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Family Medicine. The incumbent will be expected to become an active member of the St-Mary’s Research Centre and will be expected to collaborate with the St. Mary’s Family Medicine Group as well as with other McGill University Family Medicine Groups (FMG-Us). The successful candidate will also be expected to supervise a diverse body of students, develop a research program in family medicine and primary healthcare of the highest international standards, contribute to formal teaching, and disseminate research findings through peer-reviewed publications and other knowledge translation and exchange activities.

The incumbent will be responsible for developing a strong and effective collaboration with family physicians and residents, stimulate their participation in research, facilitate the training of future clinician scientists, and participate in McGill’s Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN). This position offers a unique opportunity to advance family medicine and health systems research within a thriving academic and clinical environment. The successful candidate will be therefore expected to drive innovation, bridge research with practice, and contribute to McGill’s tradition of excellence in education, research, and patient-centered care.

The successful candidate will be expected to develop and lead a robust research program that aligns with the McGill University Strategic Research Plan, with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences’ Strategic Research Plan, with the academic mission of the McGill University Department of Family Medicine, and with the Strategic Research Plan of the St-Mary’s Research Centre.

More specifically, the Department of Family Medicine and the St-Mary’s Research Centre are looking to further develop the following types of research programs:

  • Evidence-based healthcare innovation, focusing on health services, organizational, and policy research to transform discovery into actionable healthcare impacts. This includes driving quality and equity in health systems, with a specific focus on informed decision-making by key partners on organization of healthcare systems based on evidence, through organizational, and/or policy research;
  • Inclusive healthcare innovation, addressing local and global unmet health needs by advancing personalized care for a diverse society. This includes emphasizing health promotion, prevention, and responding to health challenges arising from a changing environment;
  • Inclusive research approaches, prioritizing equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles by addressing systemic barriers and fostering intersectionality. This includes advancing healthcare innovation for diverse populations, including immigrants and refugees; incorporating Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) perspectives; women’s health issues; and, engaging Indigenous communities in meaningful, respectful, and collaborative ways to address their specific primary care challenges;
  • Community engagement, leveraging participatory methodologies and patient partnerships to ensure research reflects and addresses the needs of marginalized and underserved groups.

The successful candidate’s administrative and leadership duties will include supporting the academic mission of the McGill University Department of Family Medicine and the St-Mary’s Research Centre by participating in committees, research seminars, journal clubs, and other scientific programming. The incumbent will be expected to foster collaboration, mentor junior researchers, and advance initiatives that align with the strategic goals of both institutions.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., teaching, research, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees). The incumbent will be expected to work closely with clinician educators to enhance their scholarly activity, building research capacity within the department and the research centre.

McGill faculty members are expected to contribute to service activities within their units, the University, and the wider scholarly community. A demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion is also expected.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
Candidates must:

  • Hold a PhD or a medical degree;
  • Have formal research training and evidence of a research track record in an appropriate discipline;
  • Provide evidence of scholarly excellence with the potential to obtain external research funding;
  • Have a proven track record of research productivity;
  • Have the potential to develop an internationally recognized independent research program with a demonstrated ability to obtain grants and external funding (e.g., CIHR, FRQS, CCSRI, CPAC), and the capacity to contribute to the building of successful research programs;
  • Demonstrate a commitment to, and evidence of, high-quality teaching, inclusive pedagogy, and effective supervision;
  • Be able to foster collaborative relationships through effective communication, interpersonal skills, and strategic team building;
  • Fluency in English is essential; a working knowledge of French, or a commitment to acquiring it within a few years of appointment is preferred.
