Position Summary
BCIT’s Student Housing department is seeking a regular, full-time (1.0 FTE) Manager, Residence Life. This position manages
BCIT Student Housing Residence Life programming, staffing, and operations. Responsible for managing the provision of Student Life support services that foster student development, success and community through meaningful orientation and transition experiences. Lives in assigned accommodation on campus and is responsible for all aspects of student life in Student Housing, including overall programming and budget. Manages the development of programs to enhance the student experience, retention, academic and personal success, community and personal development. Responsible for the management of 24-hour Resident Advisor support and crisis management in Housing.
Duties & Responsibilities
- As a member of the leadership team, supports the Associate Director in the development of department plans, policies and performance goals. Manages the delivery of Resident Life department goals and ensures that they are appropriately met.
- Uses an equity lens to recommend and determine priorities and practices. Develops long and short-term objectives for the Student Housing Residence Life and provides guidance and tools to ensure these are met.
- Provides operational leadership for the Resident Life function within Student Housing by managing Residence Life staff and programming, including new student orientation, transitions, community building, and community member development and personal growth.
- Manages targets and objectives, striving for effectiveness in the development, implementation and delivery of Resident Life services and/or programs. Develops an assessment strategy for performance of Residence life programming.
- Manages a team of Resident Coordinators and Resident Advisors, overseeing the recruitment, selection, coaching, mentoring, development, payment, and leadership development.
- Develops and manages the delivery of the Resident Life programming to support community development and growth. Applies an equity, diversity and inclusion to all programs, support and approaches.
- Addresses all concerning student behaviours, including student care, conflict and conduct. Ensures early intervention and corrective measures for all parties involved in incidents involving students and allegations of student non-academic misconduct that occur under the Housing oversight. Consults with appropriate internal resources including departments such as Counselling, Accessibility Services, Student Housing, Student Health Services, and Safety and Security.
- Conducts meetings with student(s) involved in alleged incidents to determine and to monitor interim measures in accordance with
BCIT policies. Seeks dispute resolution through mutually agreeable resolutions as appropriate. - Provides 24-hour live-in support to Resident Advisors, students and responds to student crisis and resident emergencies.
- Embodies the values of Anti-racism, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in programming, structures and practice; create inclusive experiences for accessible, experiential, integrated learning and social interactions.
- Liaises with parents, faculty, staff who may be impacted by critical incidents to ensure they are appropriately supported and works with Student Life, SSEM, RCMP, and emergency services to support investigations and crisis response.
- Develops and manages inter-functional relationships, working collaboratively with other leaders/stakeholders to share information, solve problems, make decisions and to support the management of the admissions and occupancy processes, including recruitment, systems, selections, and communications for long-term, short-term, and conference stays.
- Maintains awareness of emerging trends, practices, legislation and regulatory requirements in housing in post-secondary education, competing environments and related business environments. Works with Associate Director, Housing to engage in environmental scans, develops relationships with external contacts and participates in professional organizations.
- Manages departmental expenditures and reassesses departmental needs based on funding available.
- Manages reporting staff, overseeing and participating in selection, coaching, mentoring, development, performance management and all other people-management practices.
Qualifications & Requirement
- Completion of a Bachelor degree in education, counselling, psych or another related discipline
- Five years of experience in student housing in a post-secondary environment
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
- Experience with working with a diverse student population and is current in emerging practices in reducing barriers for equity deserving groups.
- Experience in developing and administering community standards and an understanding of the principles of administrative fairness.
- Experience managing and/or supervising employees
- Advanced problem-solving skills, the ability to resolve complex problems and manage high profile, sensitive, and contentious issues is required.
- Strong leadership skills preferably in a unionized environment with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Strong communication skills both verbal and written to collaborate effectively with internal and external stakeholders and the ability to develop strategic relationships.
- Strong working knowledge of residence live best practices
- Availability and commitment to work on an on-call basis around the clock, and to frequently lead operations outside of regular work schedules throughout the year,is essential.
- Familiarity using software systems (such as resident housing or hotel applications)
- Ability to be able to live in on-campus housing year-round.
- Excellent conflict resolution, intervention, mediation & crisis response skills.
- Must be able to work on call to be able to respond to after hour emergencies.
- The successful candidate will be required to provide a satisfactory Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Search (issued no later than six (6) months preceding start date) and maintain criminal record clearance.
