Position Summary
The Department of Biomedical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Alberta invites applications for a full-time Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) member at the Associate or Full Lecturer rank for a one-year term appointment. The successful candidate will play a critical role in teaching and curriculum development within our graduate programs. This position will focus on delivering and designing graduate-level courses in key areas such as regulatory risk management, laboratory best practices (GMP/GLP), cell/tissue engineering, and AI/ML applications in biomedical engineering. The role also includes hands-on laboratory instruction and mentorship of graduate and undergraduate students.
Beyond teaching responsibilities, the position will involve leading curriculum review/improvement initiatives, contributing to pedagogical scholarship, and engaging in departmental governance and outreach activities. We seek a dynamic educator and scholar with significant regulatory experience, laboratory expertise, and commitment to innovative teaching and program development in a multidisciplinary setting.
This position will be a one-year term appointment under the Academic Teaching Staff (ATS) https://www.ualberta.ca/en/human-resources-health-safety-environment/employment-information/collective-agreements-and-handbooks.html. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience following the Collective Agreement.
The successful candidate will have an anticipated start date of August 1, 2025.

RESPONSIBILITIES
Teaching of University Credit Courses:
- Provides instruction to undergraduate and/or graduate students (i.e. course in the area of Engineering models of cells and tissues as well as additional BME courses; provides hands-on training in laboratory techniques and good laboratory practice fundamentals to undergraduate and graduate students; provides instructions in AI/ML literacy relevant to regulations; manage teaching laboratory compliance at the state-of-the-art and regulatory level).
- Design course syllabus; order textbooks and other course materials as required; prepare, administer, and mark final exams/assignments; complete records related to grades; may be required to prepare and/or administer deferred exams (i.e. course in the area of Engineering models of cells and tissues as well as new BME courses).
- Evaluates student performance progress and provides appropriate and timely feedback according to department protocols.
- May provide supervision to undergraduate students.
- Demonstrates scholarship and remain current and competent in the discipline or profession by keeping course syllabi and assignments relevant to the needs of the current student.
- Abide by Faculty and University Academic policies.
- Other duties normally required by ATS.
Teaching-Related Activities:
- Participates in the development of curriculum and design of courses and labs (i.e. participates in designing the curriculum; lead the development of documentation and facilitate the process of approval; identifies opportunities for curriculum improvement and renewal, both in terms of content and pedagogical delivery; coordinates implementation of curricular development activities; develops strategies to incorporate AI/ML literacy in the course delivery; engages in pedagogical scholarship to evaluate effectiveness of course delivery, evaluations, student engagement etc.; publishes the findings in relevant Engineering Education literature).
- Attends course-related orientations, meetings and other activities related to teaching assignment.
- May be required to teach additional LAB/SEM with compensation for the additional FTE.
- May oversee GSA TAs assigned to the course(s).
- Hold office hours as per department policy.
- Assists in the management of teaching assignments.
- Calls and chairs meetings.
- Other duties normally required by ATS.
Service Contributions:
- Participate in program continual improvement and accreditation processes (i.e. participates in BME MSc course-based program yearly review; participates in peer-review of teaching effectiveness within the Department).
- Participates in the governance of the Department through committee membership (i.e. attending and participating in Department meetings and relevant Departmental committees).
- Disseminates knowledge to the general public by making available their expertise and knowledge of the discipline (i.e. participates in the development and delivery of outreach events for schools in the Edmonton area).
Qualifications
- PhD Degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biophysics or other discipline combining subject matter knowledge in the Biomedical field with strong computational skills.
- 10+ years of experience in a regulatory environment relevant to Biomedical Engineering, such as Health Canada, U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
- In-depth knowledge and technical skills in biomedical laboratory research methods.
- Proven track record in scholarship, such as a publication record.
- Teaching experience, especially in an experiential environment.

- Facilitation, negotiation and problem-solving skills and an ability to handle challenging situations.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to adapt and to collaborate with colleagues.
- Technically proficient in the computer environment and has a working knowledge of various applications to deliver teaching materials.
- AI/ML knowledge enabling its integration into the Biomedical Engineering curriculum.
