The Art Canada Institute (ACI) is now accepting applications for The New Voices Publishing Fellowship, a prestigious postdoctoral opportunity dedicated to supporting emerging scholars in the field of Canadian art history.

This one-of-a-kind, $60,000 fellowship offers early-career researchers the chance to write and publish their first major art history book as part of ACI’s accessible online art book library.

Inside the Fellowship Experience:
The New Voices Publishing Fellowship is the only opportunity of its kind in Canada, offering:

  • Mentorship by trailblazing figures in the Canadian art world
  • Professional editorial support to develop a manuscript on a topic in Canadian art
  • Opportunity to present to ACI’s community of scholars, artists, and patrons
  • A contract with ACI to produce an online art book

The successful fellow will develop an original manuscript of 30,000–40,000 words over the course of 12 months, and will play a key role in expanding the public’s understanding of Canadian art.

Applicants are invited to submit proposals for manuscripts that fall under ACI’s major series and publishing streams, including:

  • Life & Work: Accessible, richly illustrated overview of an artist’s life, major works, and impact.
  • Artist Groups: Exploration of the history, influence, and legacy of the most important collectives and collaborations in Canadian art.
  • Canadian Cities: Examination of regional art histories and their national significance.
  • Themes in Canadian Art: Thematic titles that delve into the key subjects shaping the country’s art.

Who Should Apply?

ACI welcomes applications from postdoctoral scholars who:

  • Are Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • Hold a PhD in art history or a closely related field
  • Are at an early stage of their academic career (completed PhD within the past 7 years)
  • Are not currently enrolled in a graduate program
  • Are not in permanent or tenure-track faculty positions
  • Demonstrate significant expertise and experience in the study of Canadian art, broadly defined to encompass historical, contemporary, Indigenous, and/or diasporic art practices in Canada
  • Can begin the fellowship in September 2026

*Applicants currently finishing their PhD are eligible, provided they have a confirmed defense date before September 2026.
