Salary: $39,002.60 + MERCs

SUMMARY
The Environmental Chemistry and Biomarker Discovery Program at Algoma University, Department of Biology is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate to support an ambitious multidisciplinary research initiative in untargeted metabolomics, eutrophication diagnostics, cyanobacterial metabolite chemistry, and AI-assisted environmental data analysis. The successful candidate will work with advanced analytical platforms (LC-QTOF, LC-MS/MS), digital data pipelines, and organism–metabolite frameworks to identify biomarkers of freshwater ecosystem change in close collaboration with Environment and Climate Change Canada’s Centre of Inland Waters (ECCC-CCIW), and International Institute for Sustainable Development Experimental Lakes Area (IISD-ELA).
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Conduct sample preparation, extraction.
- Operate LC–QTOF and LC–MS/MS for untargeted and targeted analysis.
- Perform data acquisition, annotation, and multivariate analysis.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and data management systems.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Environmental Science or related field
- Experience with analytical chemistry techniques (e.g., LC–MS, LC-MS/MS).
- Be a new entrant into the workforce, transitioning to a new career, or unemployed/underemployed and entering a new field.
- Not have previously participated in a NOHFC-funded internship.
- Be at least 18 years of age.
- Reside in Northern Ontario, or be willing to relocate for the duration of the internship.
- Be legally entitled to work in Canada.
