The Ron Joyce Centre for Business Studies/Commerce Department at Mount Allison University invites applications for a full-time three-year term appointment in Commerce. The appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer (for ABD until PhD completion) or Assistant (for PhD) Professor and will commence on July 1, 2026, subject to budgetary approval.
Commerce is looking for a candidate with a PhD (or near completion) in Finance or closely related quantitative discipline to teach five undergraduate courses annually in Venture Capital and in Finance. The successful candidate will be expected to teach COMM 4531-Venture Capital & Finance of Innovation, COMM 3361-Entrepreneurship & New Venture Creation, as well as mainstream courses in Finance. The successful candidate will also be expected to develop and offer other courses in Finance, such as Financial Institutions, Canadian Securities, FinTech, Sustainable Investing, Risk Management, Behavioral Finance, and/or International Finance, etc.
Qualifications/Skills:
The following is required/preferred:
- D. (or near completion) in Finance or closely related quantitative discipline (Financial Management or Financial Economics) is required. For candidates nearing completion of their degree, appointments will be contingent upon successful completion of the Ph.D. by an agreed-upon date.
- Documented ability to teach undergraduate quantitative courses in Finance (i.e., course outlines, etc.) is required.
- Documented commitment to high quality undergraduate teaching (i.e., students’ evaluation, etc.) is required.
- Documented potential for high-quality research, including examples of success in areas such as securing external funding, publishing in reputable outlets, fostering research collaborations, and achieving future research impact through both traditional and non-traditional avenues (i.e., academic papers, etc.) is preferred.
- Experience and/or willingness to mentor students in Commerce honours thesis studies and/or independent studies (e.g., PFP, CFP or CFA exam preparation) is preferred.
The following would be considered an asset:
- PFP, CFP or CFA coursework/designation and/or a closely related designation.
- Documented ability to teach undergraduate courses related to Venture Capital.
- Documented commitment to high quality engagement and experiential learning (e.g., trading simulations, etc.).

About the Department of Commerce:
The Commerce Department offers undergraduate programs, including a Bachelor of Commerce (with an optional honours stream), a Bachelor of Commerce with Aviation, and a Bachelor of Arts with Commerce majors and minors. Commerce students at MTA are required to complete a minor in another discipline, in addition to fulfilling degree requirements from elsewhere in the university. Faculty members contribute teaching to the core curriculum as well as to their areas of specialism.
Faculty are research active with local, national and international collaborators and lead community-engaged research and experiential learning projects involving undergraduate students. Currently, faculty members hold grants with Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, New Brunswick Innovation Foundation (NBIF) and Co-operative Education and Work-Integrated Learning Canada (CEWIL).
Experiential learning has long been a distinguishing feature of the Commerce program with individual faculty members regularly designing and delivering course-related experiential and work-integrated-learning opportunities ranging from guest speakers and field trips, knowledge mobilization projects, research and organizational quality assurance projects, live case studies, student summer research opportunities and case competitions, as well as mentorships and internships.
