The Vice-rectorate of research and creation at the Université du Québec en Abitibi-Témiscamingue (UQAT) is seeking exceptional candidates for a Tier II Canada Research Chair in Silviculture and Forest Management with a tenure-track faculty position. Tier II Chairs, tenable for five years and renewable once, are for exceptional emerging researchers, acknowledged by their peers as having the potential to lead their field.

The Chair’s research program should focus on one or more themes related to silviculture and forest management in boreal contexts. The program is encouraged to leverage the Lac Duparquet Teaching and Research Forest (https://ferld.uqat.ca/missionE.htm). The anticipated start date is January 2026. The successful candidate will join the Forest Research Institute (IRF) (https://www.uqat.ca/uqat/departements/irf/).

Appointments under the Canada Research Chairs program must be submitted to the program secretariat and the appointment to a chair may not be conducted without the agreement of the Secretariat (see the Regulations of the Canada Research Chairs https://www.chairs-chaires.gc.ca/program-programme/index-eng.aspx). The chosen candidate will also be invited to submit an application up to $500 000 at the John-R-Evans Leader fund of the Canadian Foundation of Innovation (https://www.innovation.ca/awards/john-r-evans-leaders-fund).

Requirements
Candidates for the position of professor at the Forest Research Institute must hold a PhD degree (PhD with a specialization in historical or paleoecology) for less than 10 years and must demonstrate exceptional potential to gain a significant international reputation within the next five years. They must be fluent in French and English or fluent in English and intend to learn French. Applicants will be expected to propose an innovative and high-quality research program, that will attract research funding from granting agencies and is likely to attract excellent graduate students. The successful candidate should also be willing to participate in the management of the Lac Duparquet Teaching and Research Forest and collaborate with faculty members in research, teaching, administration, and community service. Interest in interdisciplinary and international collaborations and affiliation with a recognized professional order (e.g., Ordre des ingénieurs forestiers du Québec, Registered Professional Foresters) is also expected.

The different tasks associated with this position are research, graduate teaching (MSc and PhD), university administration, and supervising graduate theses and dissertations.

  • A research proposal (maximum three pages) for the proposed Chair, including a five-year research plan that demonstrates a strong commitment to research excellence;
  • Three letters of reference, two of which must be from individuals not affiliated with UQAT (except for the candidate’s research supervisor), and one from an individual with no conflict of interest with the candidate;
  • A photocopy of the PhD diploma.
