Position Overview
The Manager, Knowledge Mobilization and Communications is responsible for leading the strategic communications function within Volt-Age. Reporting to senior leadership, the role oversees the development and execution of integrated communication strategies that elevate Volt-Age’s visibility, impact, and reputation among academic, industry, government, and public audiences.
The Manager, Knowledge Mobilization and Communications supervises the communications and events support staff, ensuring alignment between communications activities, outreach initiatives, and organizational priorities. The role provides strategic oversight for communication planning, narrative development, campaign coordination, and long-term engagement initiatives, while establishing integrated timelines that connect milestones, activities, partnerships and events to Volt-Age’s and Concordia’s broader strategic vision. The position is responsible for overseeing the full event pipeline at Volt-Age, ensuring that event planning, delivery, sponsorship engagement, communications, and post-event activities are coordinated to maximize strategic impact.
In addition to strategic leadership responsibilities, the role maintains an active hands-on presence in the implementation and coordination of communications and event-related activities, supporting the successful execution of institutional and research engagement initiatives.
A key function of this position is serving as the primary liaison between Volt-Age and Concordia University Communications Services, ensuring alignment with institutional communication standards, branding and media relations protocols.
Responsibilities:
Strategic Communications Leadership
- Develop, implement and update a comprehensive communications strategy aligned with Volt-Age’s priorities and institutional objectives.
- Establish communication priorities, campaigns, and plans that support Volt-Age’s objectives.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of communication strategies and outreach activities, monitor trends and metrics and recommend and implement improvements.
- Manage the Volt-Age communications budget, within the established parameters.
- Establish Standard Operating Procedures for recurring activities.
- Create and maintain integrated communications calendars and timelines that align activities, milestones and initiatives.
- Advise leadership on communication opportunities, reputational considerations, and stakeholder engagement strategies.
- Ensure consistency of messaging, tone, and visual identity across all communication platforms and materials.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to align communication initiatives with the evolving strategic direction of the research program.
- Ensure communications activities support institutional policies, accessibility standards, and equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) principles.
Event Implementation
- Overseeing the full event (including research announcements, seminars, and conferences) pipeline, ensuring that event planning, delivery, sponsorship engagement, communications, and post-event activities are coordinated to maximize strategic impact.
- Provide hands-on support in preparation for and during events and public-facing activities to ensure effective execution, audience engagement, sponsor visibility, and alignment with communication objectives.
- Contribute to the development and management of sponsorship opportunities related to events and outreach initiatives.
- Ensure communications, sponsorship, and event activities collectively support Volt-Age’s broader strategic goals.
Content Development and Knowledge Mobilization
- Lead the development of high-level communication materials including annual reports and impact stories.
- Translate complex scientific and research content into accessible materials for diverse audiences including researchers, partners, policymakers, funders, students, and the general public.
- Oversee storytelling initiatives that highlight research achievements, partnerships, and societal impact.
- Guide the development and dissemination of digital content across web, newsletter, and social media platforms.
- Manage the Knowledge Mobilization and Events Support Program, including analyzing proposals on a bi-annual basis, preparing summary materials for funding decisions and supporting the implementation of selected proposals.
Team Leadership and Coordination
- Supervise and provide strategic direction to the communications and events support staff.
- Coordinate workflows, priorities, and deliverables across communications and event-related activities to ensure alignment with objectives.
Institutional Liaison
- Serve as the primary liaison with Concordia’s University Communications Services to ensure alignment with institutional communications policies, branding standards and media relations procedures.
- Proactively identify media and public engagement opportunities that support the strategic positioning of the organization’s research initiatives, working closely with University Communications Services to coordinate media outreach, press materials, and institutional communications.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism, Marketing, or a related field.
- Master’s degree considered an asset, particularly in communications, or a research-related discipline.
- Minimum 3-5 years of experience supervising staff and coordinating cross-functional projects and timelines.
- Minimum 7–10 years of progressive experience in communications, preferably within a university, research, nonprofit, or innovation environment.
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing strategic communications plans.
- Experience communicating complex research or technical subject matter to diverse audiences.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and French.
- Excellent strategic planning and organizational skills to effectively coordinate work, set and adhere to timelines, and prioritize.
- Ability to synthesize complex information into compelling narratives.
- Demonstrated leadership capacity to take charge of a project or initiative and see it through.
- Ability to balance strategic oversight with hands-on implementation responsibilities.
- Advanced visual design capability and demonstrated experience with relevant tools (e.g. Canva, Figma, or others).
- Proficiency with digital communications platforms, project management and analytics tools.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, to manage multiple priorities, and liaise with multiple stakeholders in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
