Too much intellectual property from Canadian universities ends up in foreign hands
Some prominent Canadian universities, including McGill, the University of Toronto, the University of Waterloo and the University of British Columbia, have drawn criticism for their researchers’ continuing collaborations with Chinese telecom giant Huawei – partnerships that transfer Canadian-funded intellectual property offshore.

University of Waterloo cuts ties with Huawei over federal security rules
The University of Waterloo is cutting ties with research partner Huawei, citing the government of Canada’s mandatory risk-assessment framework for university researchers, introduced two years ago to safeguard intellectual property from authoritarian governments.
