Biological Sciences - Assistant Professor (Evolution of Fungal Diversity)

The Department of Biological Sciences brings together research teams committed to training qualified scientists and responsible citizens by engaging in research to advance knowledge and promoting quality education. The department is composed of experts working in a multidisciplinary context to understand all facets of life, whether it involves animals, plants, or microorganisms, from molecules to ecosystems, and to promote a sustainable environment for future generations. Department members have access to state-of-the-art facilities in molecular biology, genomics, microscopy, and computing located on the new MIL campus, where they share additional equipment and expertise with the Departments of Chemistry, Physics, and Geography, as well as with the Plant Biology Research Institute (IRBV), located at the Montreal Botanical Garden. The selected candidate will be affiliated with IRBV and the Biodiversity Center 

Day-to-day responsibilities
Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

• Develop and maintain an internationally recognized, externally funded research program.
• Teach and supervise undergraduate and graduate students in biological sciences
• Contribute to the operation and development of the Department of Biological Sciences, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the University of Montreal through participation in committees and working groups;
• Foster an inclusive, collaborative, and supportive learning and research environment.
• Act as curator of the Fongarium of the Université de Montréal by promoting its use in research and teaching.

Qualifications

• Hold a Ph.D. in Biology, Mycology, Evolutionary Biology, Ecology, or a closely related discipline.
• Have acquired postdoctoral experience or equivalent research experience.
• Have an excellent publication record; Demonstrate the ability to establish an NSERC funded research program.
• Demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality university teaching to the undergraduate and graduate student;
• Demonstrate strong communication and collaboration skills;
• Demonstrate potential to develop national and international collaborations;
• Have the ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary context, in complementarity with faculty members;
• Required qualifications include expertise in one or more of the following:
  • Fungal biodiversity and systematics
  • Fungal phylogenetics and phylogenomics
  • Evolution and development
  • Research involving the use of fungal collection specimens
• Have adequate proficiency of the French language or be committed to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
• Successful candidates who would need to improve their French will be offered a free learning program through the university to facilitate their transition into the UdeM and Montréal communities;
