The Faculty of Environmental Design of the Université de Montréal, founded in 1968, is home to three schools: the School of Architecture, the School of Design, and the School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture. Its mission is to advance knowledge and train high-calibre talent capable of transforming environmental design practices through research and innovation. The Faculty comprises some 20 research units and 23 educational programs, all dedicated to the study of human-environment interactions and the designing of built and natural spaces.

The School of Urban Planning and Landscape Architecture (École d’urbanisme et d’architecture de paysage) is recognized for the excellence of its teaching and research as well as for its significant contribution to the practice of landscape architecture and urban planning in Quebec. It is the only school in Quebec to offer undergraduate and graduate professional programs in landscape architecture and urban planning, that are recognized by a professional regulatory body. Our programs are accredited by the Association des architectes paysagistes du Québec (bachelor’s degree), the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (master’s degree), and the Ordre des urbanistes du Québec (bachelor’s and master’s degrees).

Your contribution will bridge the gap between landscape architecture and urban planning. Your contribution to our School will be to strengthen the integration of our programs in these two disciplines with regard to cutting-edge issues, including: Ecological transition, Climate change, Participatory and collaborative approaches, Inclusive design and equity, Landscape projects and Urban and real estate projects.

Day-to-day responsibilities
Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:

  • Teach undergraduate and master’s degree programs, as well as for the Ph.D. in environmental design program;
  • Supervise undergraduate and graduate students, in both professional and research programs;
  • Develop a high-level research program addressing cutting-edge issues in landscape architecture and urban planning;
  • Participate actively in the academic life, functioning and development of the School, Faculty and institution through contributions to committees and working groups;
  • Contribute to the advancement of research and practice in landscape architecture and urban planning, and to the reputation of the Université de Montréal, through lectures, publications, and other significant scientific and professional activities.

Qualifications

  • Hold a Ph.D. in landscape architecture, urban planning, or a related discipline to environmental design. Applications from candidates who have submitted their thesis may be considered;
  • Demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality teaching and guidance at all three academic levels at the intersection of landscape architecture and urban planning;
  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate the disciplines of landscape architecture and urban planning into teaching and research;
  • Have the ability and experience to work in a team in an interdisciplinary context and in collaboration with faculty members;
  • The following are considered assets:
    • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in landscape architecture;
    • Experience in teaching or practice in development projects and design;
  • Have adequate proficiency of the French language or be committed to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
