The School of Computing at Queen’s University invites applications for a faculty position at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor that centres on Computational Intelligence. The preferred start date for the appointment is January 1, 2027.

QualificationsCandidates must have a PhD or equivalent degree completed at the start date of the appointment. The successful candidate will provide evidence of high-quality scholarly output that demonstrates potential for independent research leading to peer assessed publications and the securing of external research funding, as well as strong potential for outstanding teaching contributions at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, and an ongoing commitment to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of the department’s programs. Candidates must provide evidence of an ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-centred environment. The successful candidate will also be expected to make contributions through service to the department, the Faculty, the University, and/or the broader community.

The main criteria for selection are:

  • a demonstrated commitment to academic and teaching excellence, including experience in curriculum development; and
  • a proven capacity for research in areas of Computational Intelligence, including generative AI, machine learning, natural language processing, evolutionary computation and quantum computing.

Scholarly work applying Computational Intelligence to areas such as robotics, software development, and Human Computer Interaction will be considered an asset.

The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as meaningful contributions in research or scholarship. The successful candidate will also be expected to:

  • work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary and student-focused environment;
  • contribute to academic and pedagogical excellence in support of the programs in the School of Computing; and
  • provide effective service contributions to the School, the Faculty of Arts and Science, the University, and the broader community.
  • A demonstrated commitment to the principles of Indigenization, equity, diversity, inclusion, anti-racism, and accessibility (I-EDIAA) in the teaching and research environment.

The diverse backgrounds of applicants and the type of scholarship appropriate to their research areas, as well as the diverse range of scholarly methodologies and ways of measuring impact will be taken into account when assessing the quality of the scholarly or creative work. Candidates will be evaluated using the principles of the Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA) and with attention to the diverse ways excellence can be demonstrated. The successful candidate will also be expected to make contributions through service to the department, the Faculty, the University, and/or the broader community.

The annual salary for this appointment is expected to be between $165,000 - $190,000. Actual Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Vaccination Requirements
Prior to May 1, 2022, the University required all students, faculty, staff, and visitors (including contractors) to declare their COVID-19 vaccination status and provide proof that they were fully vaccinated or had an approved accommodation to engage in in-person University activities. These requirements were suspended effective May 1, 2022, but the University may reinstate them at any point.

The School of Computing
The School of Computing has 32 full-time and 20 cross-appointed faculty, over 1500 undergraduate students, and over 200 graduate students. The School offers undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Software Design, Computing and Mathematics, Computing and the Creative Arts and Cognitive Science, as well as dedicated major options in Artificial Intelligence, Biomedical Computation, Data Analytics, Fundamental Computation, and Security. The School also offers Master’s, and Doctoral programs in Computer Science, with dedicated programs for Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, Medical Informatics, and Biomedical Informatics.

The University is situated on the traditional territories of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaabe, in historic Kingston on the shores of Lake Ontario. Queen’s is an integral part of the Kingston community, with the campus nestled in the core of the city, only a 10-minute walk to downtown.
