Position Profile:
The Department of Medicine, Division of Emergency Medicine, Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, at Western University and London Health Sciences Centre and St. Joseph’s Health Care London is seeking physicians for full-time clinical academic appointments to Western University. Applicants should be certified, or eligible for certification, in Emergency Medicine by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, the College of Family Physicians in Emergency Medicine (CCFP(EM)), or equivalent. Candidates must have an MD, or equivalent, and must be eligible for licensure by the College of Physicians & Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO) in the province of Ontario.

Academic and Clinical Expectations: The Division of Emergency Medicine is seeking academic emergency physicians who will provide clinical care in two tertiary care academic emergency departments and an urgent care centre. Opportunities and areas of focused interest include medical education, research, sports medicine, wilderness medicine, point of care ultrasound and simulation. Clinical work includes providing on shift teaching to learners at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. Academic contributions include undergraduate teaching at the Schulich School of Medicine as well as growth in the area of academic interest of the emergency physician.

Qualifications: Applicants for the Clinician Teacher academic positions must demonstrate a strong commitment to excellence in teaching and clinical education. They should have a clear record of involvement in medical education, including experience teaching learners at various stages such as medical students, residents, or fellows. The applicants must show evidence of educational effectiveness through (1) participation in formal training or coursework in medical education or teaching methodology; (2) a track record of high-quality teaching evaluations or demonstrated educational leadership; and (3) the ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues in designing and delivering educational experiences. Engagement in curriculum development, assessment strategies, or innovative educational initiatives in dermatology will be considered an asset.

Consideration of applicants will include an assessment of previous performance in Emergency Medicine research and teaching. Candidates with qualifications and or previous experience in Emergency Medicine research and or teaching will be given priority. Consideration of applicants will also include an assessment of previous performance in teaching, research, health care leadership, qualifications (including subspecialty and enhanced training), experience and interpersonal skills.

Compensation Details: Compensation for this position will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be primarily composed of the following sources: Fee for service (OHIP billings), Alternative Funding Plan, academic productivity-based compensation.

Department: The Department of Medicine is the largest department within the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Western Ontario. The Department has 270 full-time members representing fifteen academic Divisions and is responsible for more than 30 million dollars in annual research expenditures. The Department engages in undergraduate and postgraduate medical training of approximately 200 trainees in London, Windsor and throughout Southwestern Ontario. Department researchers are active in both clinical and basic research at the hospitals and their affiliated research institutes, including the Lawson Health Research Institute and Robarts Research Institute. The Department has strategically focused on academic excellence in research through the creation of programs such as the Program of Experimental Medicine (POEM), centers of excellence in translational and patient-oriented research, as well in medical education and innovation. Many investigators are world leaders in their respective fields of research.

The Division: The Division of Emergency Medicine currently consists of 80 diverse and progressive academic clinician educators, administrators and researchers. The successful candidates for this position will have a record of proven ability for teaching and will be expected to teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels and to supervise graduate trainees. The expected role includes education of fellows, residents, and medical students in Emergency Department and Urgent Care settings. The successful candidates will have significant experience providing excellent clinical care. The successful candidates will be expected to participate in the academic commitment of the Division and Department.
