The Department of Linguistics and Translation comprises approximately twenty permanent professors and researchers, offers over 100 courses annually across all levels of study, and serves more than 500 students, with nearly 175 graduates each year. The British firm QS has ranked the Université de Montréal among the world’s top 150 universities for linguistics. Recognized as one of Canada’s leading schools of translation, the Department has been training professionals and conducting research for over 50 years.
The Department is seeking candidates with a focus on the application of Artificial Intelligence to terminological data, the structuring and representation of specialized knowledge, and the circulation of knowledge and terms across various spheres of society and within minoritized languages.
Day-to-day responsibilities
Through your undergraduate and graduate-level teaching, and your research activities, you will contribute to the faculty’s pursuit of excellence. Furthermore, you will promote your discipline and actively participate in the daily activities of a renowned institution. As such, you will:
- Teach at all levels of study, particularly in the areas of Terminology and Terminography, Language for special purposes, Neology, Terminology planning, and Terminotics;
- Supervise graduate students;
- Develop an innovative, high-level research program in Terminology;
- Participate in developing the course curriculum, particularly in Terminology, Terminotics, and the use of Language technologies;
- Participate in the operations and departmental life of the Translation and Linguistics sections, as well as in departmental committees and student recruitment;
- Contribute to the University’s outreach and the dissemination of knowledge through conferences, publications, and scholarly activities.
Qualifications
- Hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) in Terminology, Translation, Applied linguistics, or a related field. Applications from candidates in the final stages of writing their thesis will also be considered;
- Possess an excellent publication record in the field of Terminology, demonstrating the potential to publish and secure funding from major granting agencies;
- Have in-depth knowledge of the discipline's theoretical frameworks and terminographic working methods;
- Demonstrate the ability to provide high-quality university-level instruction in Terminology;
- Demonstrate the potential to supervise graduate students;
- Demonstrate the potential to develop internal, national, and international collaborations;
- Have the ability to work as part of a team in an interdisciplinary context and to complement the existing faculty;
- Expertise considered an asset:
- Research interest in the relationship between Terminology and Artificial Intelligence systems (grounding language models in structured terminological resources, semi-automatic extraction and validation, evaluation of the terminological quality of generative models);
- Competence in Information and Knowledge management (structuring and representation of specialized content, design of knowledge organization systems, governance and lifecycle of terminological data, resource interoperability);
- Knowledge of minoritized languages or research experience in Terminology or Neology regarding these languages, conducted in collaboration with the relevant communities;
- Teaching experience is an asset.
- Member of the Ordre des traducteurs, terminologues et interprètes agréés du Québec (OTTIAQ).
- Have adequate proficiency of the French language or be committed to learning it once hired, through the Université de Montréal’s French language support program, in accordance with the Université de Montréal language policy.
